
WHY WORK WITH A PEER MENTOR?
Being a first-year student should be an exciting and fulfilling time in your life. However, making the transition to University can be overwhelming, confusing and challenging in too many ways!
UFV Peer Mentors are third or fourth year UFV students with considerable knowledge about UFV resources and university life.
Peer Mentors have been selected and trained to address the needs of new students—and they look forward to helping YOU achieve YOUR POTENTIAL!

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM MY PEER MENTOR?
Your Peer Mentor will be expected to:
- Meet individually with you twice per month
- Be available to answer your questions and provide ongoing support to you during the Fall 2013 semester via telephone, email or face-to-face (as required)
- Help you become familiar with university resources and refer you as necessary/appropriate
- Have your best interests in mind
- Maintain confidentiality at all times

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
If you are selected to work with a UFV Peer Mentor you will be expected to:
- Agree on the structure and objectives of the relationship
- Actively listen
- Set goals and expectations
- Follow through on assigned tasks/suggestions
- Ask for feedback
- Use your and your Mentor's time wisely

GETTING READY:
A certain amount of self-assessment and preparation will help you get the most out of working with a Peer Mentor.
You should take time to:
Clarify your values (What motivates me? Which attributes do I consider most beneficial? My emotional needs?)
Identify your learning style and study habits (How do I learn best? e.g. by reading or listening? Do I prefer structured guidance/direction or minimal supervision? What are my current study habits?)
DEVELOP GOALS in the following areas different areas:
- Personal
- Academic
- Professional
SET GOALS - both short and long term Make sure that the goals you set are SMART goals
