UCFV and the Fraser Health Authority already have a close working relationship. Nursing and Practical Nursing students complete their clinical education in FHA hospitals, care facilities, and agencies, as do Home Support/Resident Care Attendants.

As UCFV places increasing emphasis on research, it only makes sense to capitalize on this partnership and work together with the FHA on health-based research through the creation of the Fraser Valley Health Research Alliance.

“The purpose of this alliance is to foster a climate of curiosity within and across partner institutions,” says Dr. Jackie Snodgrass, Dean of Health and Human Services at UCFV. “The merging of expertise, resources, and capacity under this alliance will make possible collaborative research opportunities and innovation focused on improving the quality of health care in the region and the advancement of knowledge.

“This alliance will draw on UCFV’s proven strengths in working closely with local communities to serve their needs and interests,” Snodgrass continues. “It will provide for enquiry employing research methods in which practice and education are entwined, giving UCFV students and faculty, Fraser Health Authority practitioners, and other partners mutual opportunities.”

As the largest health authority in Canada, the Fraser Health Authority serves a diverse population living in rural, suburban, and urban communities. This “living laboratory” holds the

potential to become the site of significant and widely recognized interdisciplinary health research. Researchers at UCFV from many different departments are currently engaged in health-related research, including researchers from Nursing, Psychology, Kinesiology, Social Work and Human Services, Biology, Agriculture and Early Child Education and Child and Youth Care.

The Research Alliance is setting up a forum for researchers at both institutions to share research ideas, and is setting up a structure to facilitate research collaboration.
