The program may be completed either full or part time. Typically a full time on campus student will take 2 years to complete the diploma. Part time and distance students will typically take between 3 and 5 years to complete the program. The program must be completed within 5 years of the first term of acceptance.
NOTE: Students who reside within the Metro Vancouver/Lower Mainland region are required to write scheduled midterm and final exams on the Abbotsford Campus. In addition, these students may be required to access some resources located on the Abbotsford campus. Students who reside outside the Metro Vancouver/Lower Mainland region may choose to write their exams on the Abbotsford Campus or through invigilation at a designated post-secondary institution. All exams must be written on the date and time established either by the course instructor or, in the case of final exams, according to the UFV final exam schedule for each semester.

What is Library and Information Technology?
Library and information technology is an area of study that examines various aspects of information and its management. One may also hear the terms “library science” and “knowledge management” used to describe this field of study.
Generally, library and information technology looks at how information is used, organized, described, and accessed with the ultimate purpose of getting people in touch with the information they need. Libraries, housing a variety of materials including books and electronic records are one of the largest employers of graduates from this field. However, there are many other diverse areas that can apply the skills of library and information technology graduates. Any environment that manages information, whether it is electronic or print, can be referred to as an information centre. Such centres exist in the public, non-profit and corporate sectors.
To the surprise of many, libraries have incorporated computer innovation to manage information since computers were first developed. Those who work in this field have strong computer experience and knowledge as it pertains to the acquisition and management of information. The use of technology facilitates the industry’s ability to serve the informational needs of its clientele.
Anyone with an interest in linking people with the information will find this an exciting and innovative area of work. The Library and Information Technology program at UFV offers a range of courses that allow you to explore various aspects of the field including information technology, records management, services for children and young adults and much, much more!
