Nursing Unit Clerks (NUCs) play an integral, non-clinical support role in the delivery of health care service. They are the key communication link between visitors, nurses, physicians, and other members of the health care team. Due to the fast-paced and complex nature of health care service, NUCs must possess excellent communication skills, keen multitasking abilities, and an aptitude for attention to detail. UFV’s NUC program offers students the most current industry knowledge and practical skills so that upon graduation, our students are job ready. This challenging career can be both personally and financially rewarding.

As a candidate for the program, you are required to submit the documents listed below:
1. UFV application form (no application fee required)
2. Grade 12 or equivalent

*most Health Authorities require a minimum typing speed of 45 net wpm for employment

Your application will be reviewed by the Continuing Education department. If entrance requirements (1 - 4) above are met, you will be contacted for an interview with the instructor.

UFV’s Nursing Unit Clerk certificate program will teach you a number of skills to allow you to work successfully in the demanding position of a Nursing Unit Clerk. You will learn how to communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and other members of the health care team. You will learn how to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, process doctors' orders and instructions, and perform clerical duties that relate to the overall care of the patient. You will also gain a working knowledge of health care code of ethics. UFV offers small class sizes for individualized attention and to optimize learning.
The program includes 13 courses. Courses include a combination of theory and practice-related exercises, such as processing doctors’ orders, before participating in a 150-hour hospital practicum placement.

- Medical Imaging
- Diagnostic Orders
- Laboratory Orders

- Therapeutic Orders
- Hospital Practices
You will be assessed on classroom participation, assignments, study projects, practicum and examination results. You must achieve an 80 percent grade average and attendance of 90 per cent in each course in order to earn the certificate. Letter grades are awarded; students, if they choose, can order and pay for official transcripts upon completion of the entire program.
There is a 150-hour practicum component that must be taken immediately following the 12 theory modules. You must successfully complete the theory components before you can be assigned a practicum placement. You will be responsible for your own transportation to your practicum site.
