A career in bookkeeping will allow you flexible working hours, the possibility of working from home, a steady income, and a challenging and rewarding career. In our certificate program you will learn about the general bookkeeping issues faced by small or home-based businesses. You will be taught how to keep track of expenses, generate cash flow statements, keep on top of payroll demands, and complete various taxation forms.
Our Bookkeeping for Small Business certificate offers you flexibility to study the specific courses you need. All of the courses in this program may be taken individually or applied to the Bookkeeping for Small Business certificate.
This certificate program is delivered through UFV’s Continuing Education department and consists of six courses designed with small and home-based businesses in mind.
If you plan to earn your Bookkeeping for Small Businesses certificate, courses may be taken in this order:
- Bookkeeping Level I and II
- MS Excel Level I
- Payroll Accounting
- Simply Accounting Level I and II
You will receive a grade mark for each course in the program on classroom participation, assignments, study projects, and examination results. You must achieve a 75 percent overall grade average and attendance of 80 percent in each course to earn the certificate. The grading procedure for this program is based on UFV’s Applied Business Technology grading system policy. Letter grades are awarded; students, if they choose, can order and pay for official transcripts upon completion of the entire program.

Current Course Offerings
MS Excel 2013 Level I
Learn how to use MS Excel to create spreadsheets that include Autosum, conditional formatting, formulas, and absolute addresses. Develop or edit spreadsheets using a variety of MS Excel attributes and finalize your new skills by creating charts. You’ll practise your skills using a number of projects. Purchase Shelly Cashman text at the UFV bookstore prior to class. We recommend that you purchase and bring a memory stick with a minimum storage capacity of 3gb.
CHILLIWACK — Canada Education Park

Prerequisite: Bookkeeping I, II, & MS Excel I
This is a general payroll accounting course not specific to any one business. If you have a basic knowledge of accounting, this course will teach you to perform functions related to the maintenance of a payroll accounting system. Emphasis is on the actual calculation of earnings and deductions that conform to federal and provincial laws and good accounting practices. We’ll cover the completion of forms required by law and the necessary accounting entries are performed along with basic payroll recordkeeping. Course material is included in course fee.
Sage 50 Level II (Previously Simply Accounting)
Prerequisite: Bookkeeping I & II, Payroll, and Sage 50 Level I
This course does not teach accounting fundamentals. Level II covers accounts setup, working with foreign currency, payroll transactions, security, year-end, budgets, and projects. Purchase text from UFV bookstore prior to class. We recommend that you purchase and bring a memory stick with a minimum storage capacity of 3gb.
