A career in bookkeeping will allow you flexible working hours, the possibility of working from home, a steady income, and a challenging and rewarding career. In our certificate program you will learn about the general bookkeeping issues faced by small or home-based businesses. You will be taught how to keep track of expenses, generate cash flow statements, keep on top of payroll demands, and  complete various taxation forms. 

Program Information

Our Bookkeeping for Small Business certificate offers you flexibility to study the specific courses you need. All of the courses in this program may be taken individually or applied to the Bookkeeping for Small Business certificate.

This certificate program is delivered through UFV’s Continuing Education department and consists of six courses designed with small and home-based businesses in mind.

Courses

If you plan to earn your Bookkeeping for Small Businesses certificate, courses may be taken in this order:

Courses

  • Bookkeeping Level I and II
  • MS Excel Level I
  • Payroll Accounting
  • Sage 50 Level I
  • Sage 50 Level II

Evaluation
You will receive a grade mark for each course in the program on classroom participation, assignments, study projects, and examination results. You must achieve a 75 percent overall grade average and attendance of 80 percent in each course to earn the certificate. The grading procedure for this program is based on UFV’s Applied Business Technology grading system policy. Letter grades are awarded; students, if they choose, can order and pay for official transcripts upon completion of the entire program.

This course provides an essential introduction to bookkeeping, including theoretical foundations and hands-on knowledge. Bring your calculator.

Bookkeeping II
Prerequisite: Bookkeeping I
Building on the principles covered in Bookkeeping I, learn about financial statements preparation, accounts receivable, accounts payable, subsidiary ledgers, bank reconciliations, payroll, GST, PST,
HST, trial balances, and year end.

MS Excel Level I 2013
Through a series of hands-on projects, learn how to use MS Excel 2013 to create spreadsheets that include Autosum, conditional formatting, formulas, and absolute addresses. Develop or edit
spreadsheets using a variety of MS Excel 2013 attributes and build up your new skills by creating charts. Bring a USB stick to class. This course is designed for people with prior Excel experience. We encourage students with no such experience to take MS Excel Basics.

Payroll Accounting
Prerequisite: Bookkeeping I, II, & MS Excel I
Learn to manage and maintain a payroll accounting system, with an emphasis on the calculation of earnings and deductions to conform to federal and provincial laws and accounting best practices. This is a general course that is not specific to any one business. Bring a USB stick to class.

Sage 50 Level I 2014
Prerequisite: Bookkeeping Level I and II, and Payroll Accounting
Explore the features of Sage’s Simply Accounting, an integrated bookkeeping/accounting software that is a small-business standard. Learn about journal entries, purchases/sales orders, quotes, invoicing, receipts, and payments for payables, receivables, and inventory. The course also covers reporting and tax features. Please note: Sage software is not compatible with Mac computers.

Sage 50 Level II 2014
Prerequisite: Bookkeeping I & II, Payroll, and Sage 50 Level I
