About the Mathematics & Statistics Advancement Test (MSAT)
For meeting program requirements for the School of Business and prerequisite requirements for Mathematics, Statistics, and Business courses in UFV Business Programs
Why is there a test?
The Mathematics and Statistics Advancement Test (MSAT) is a grade 11 and 12 math ability indicator for the School of Business. This test is a means of entry into various Business programs, and serves as a prerequisite for erquired Mathematics, Statistics, and Business courses in these programs. It provides as additional route for students who do not have the appropriate mathematics prerequisites. Passing this test alone is not sufficient for program acceptance; please refer to the academic calendar for program requirements.
Who should consider taking the MSAT?
Students applying for admission to Business Programs
- whose high school education was completed in other countries or provinces and are unable to receive appropriate transfer credit.
- whose high school math grades are insufficient to meet program or course prerequisite requirements.
What does the MSAT contain?
It is a closed book test and contains a set of multiple choice questions. It covers the major topics of British Columbia's grade 11 and 12 mathematics courses that form the required background knowledge for the quantitative courses in UFV Business Programs.
Part A of the MSAT includes 25 multiple choice questions which test arithmetic, algebra, numeracy, and basic problem solving skills.
Part B of the MSAT includes 25 multiple choice questions which test mathematical skills that are important in Calculus, Statistics, and Business Math, such as functions, graphing, exponents and logarithms.
What scores are needed in order to be successful?
A score of 17/25 or better on Part A provides prerequisites for the UFV courses MATH 140 and BUS 339, and the Mathematics entrance requirement for the following UFV programs: Business Administration Diploma, Administration Certificate, Marketing and Sales Certificate and Aviation Diplomas
A score of 17/25 or better on Part B, together with a score of 34/50 or better on Parts A and B combined, provides prerequisites for the UFV courses STAT106, MATH 141, BUS 143, BUS 145, BUS 149, and BUS 245, as well as the Mathematics entrance requirement for the following UFV Programs: Bachelor of Business Administration degree and Accounting Certificate.
What should you bring to the test?
Bring a pencil for solving problems on scrap paper that will be provided to you and alculators are NOT allowed. Scrap paper must be turned in at the end of your test.
The MSAT can be written ONCE only and you are allowed 2.5 hours to write.
