Floral Design Certificate Program

This certificate program will will offer you in-depth, comprehensive training that is designed to prepare you for direct employment in the floral industry. Along with a significant theory component, the program is practical and current in terms of course content and relevancy to the field. Emphasis is on mastering the correct mechanics and basic shapes of floral design using fresh, treated, and dried floral products. You will also learn some advanced techniques.

The program consists of six modules:

• Floral Design Basics I
• Floral Design Basics II
• Christmas Arrangements
• Special Occasion/Silk and Dried Flowers
• Sympathy and Church Flowers
• Wedding Flowers

The following courses are part of the Floral Design certificate program and can be taken separately or applied to the certificate.


Floral Design Certificate Basics 1 This course will provide a fundamental knowledge of flower arranging, and an introduction to common plant names. Topics include introduction to floral tools and supplies, care and handling of flowers, preparation and planning, plant identification and design. Please bring scissors, wire cutters and a paring knife to the first class. You will make your own floral arrangements to take home. Flowers and floral supplies are included in the course fee.

Floral Design Certificate Basics 2 Prerequisite: Floral Design Basics I This course covers the skills necessary to work independently on basic flower arrangements. Topics include sales, pricing, plant identification, and advanced design work. You will make your own floral arrangements to take home. Flowers and floral supplies are included in the course fee.

Floral Design Certificate Christmas This module covers a variety of Christmas designs. Fertilizers and pesticides for house plants will also be covered. Topics include product information (Christmas related materials), cone identification, decorating a Christmas tree, and designs (table centerpiece with candles, Christmas wreaths, door hangings, and one-sided arrangements). Flowers and floral supplies are included in the course fee.

Floral Design Special Occasion
This module covers the skills needed to decorate with a variety of materials other than flowers, and to incorporate floral and non-floral products into an arrangement. Topics include historical background of special holidays, product information, hospital guidelines for flowers, plant identification, and designs. Flowers and floral supplies are included in the course fee.

Floral Design Sympathy and Church
This module covers funeral and other church decorations. Sales and invoicing will also be covered. Topics include plant identification and designs such as casket sprays, funeral bouquets, wreaths, baskets, and church bouquets. Flowers and floral supplies are included in the course fee.

Floral Design Wedding
This module will provide fundamental skills to produce wedding bouquets and arrangements. Topics include marketing (how to sell wedding flowers, advertising), plant identification and designs (all around, contemporary, hand-tied, hair flowers, corsages, church arrangements). Flowers and floral supplies are included in the course fee.
