Grace Tsurumaru has been an instructor in the Visual Arts Department at the University of the Fraser Valley since 1995. She was initially responsible for developing the Photography Programme at UFV and this continues to be her primary role, but her instructional areas have also included Film Studies and Senior Studio. She has been a principle organizer of the BFA Grad Exhibition and the annual Silent Auction, a fundraising event created to financially assist the grad show and visual art scholarships. Her other responsibilities include overseeing the UFV Visual Arts Gallery and organizing the Lens & Shutter Photo Essay Competition which she introduced in 2012.
Grace has served as juror for the Canada Council for the Arts and has also served as juror for the Reach Gallery’s Fraser Valley Biennale. In 2013 she helped establish the annual BFA Award for student excellence in the BFA program, and has twice been nominated herself for the Teaching Excellence Award at the university.
Outside of her teaching curriculum, Grace’s professional development has taken her overseas to Europe, Cambodia, Rwanda, Mexico, Cuba and Sri Lanka where she has endeavoured to apply her own skills to photograph in these diverse cultures. One of her personal goals is to reunite with the youths who participated in her photography workshop in 2008 at an orphanage in Rwanda.
