FAMILY CHILDCARE

TRD FAM 01:
Introduction to Family Childcare

Prerequisites: none

The first course will give either licensed or unlicensed family childcare providers, as well as nannies or parent aides, the opportunity to gain insights into home-based childcare as a career choice with an overview of the training program, its goals, and content.

TRD FAM 02:
Understanding Children’s Development

Prerequisite: none

This course will focus on the theories of child development as they pertain to normal, physical, intellectual and emotional growth, from conception through adolescence. It will enable family childcare providers to understand the translation of child development theories into sound practice in the family childcare setting, utilizing current research to support this understanding.

TRD FAM 03:
Understanding Children’s Behaviour

Prerequisite: none

The focus of this course will be the guidance and nurture of young children based on an understanding of their behaviour. Family childcare providers will have the opportunity to achieve competency in the development of strategies for interpersonal communicating, child management and the fostering of positive emotional and social development of young children.

TRD FAM 04:
Nutrition, Health and Safety

Prerequisite: none

This course will teach participants the requirements of a program for children which focuses on nutritional needs, safety and emergency procedures, as well as health guidelines as recommended by the Ministry of Health.

TRD FAM 05:
Planning Children’s Experiences

Prerequisite: none

In this course providers of childcare will receive guidance in terms of materials, space requirements, and time management. The focus will be on play-based activities which promote learning in a developmentally appropriate manner so that children’s needs can be met on an individual basis.

TRD FAM 06:
Operation of Family Childcare as a Business

Prerequisite: none

This course will emphasize the importance of seeing home-based childcare in a professional manner — as a business and a career, including administrative procedures such as licensing, tax planning, parent/provider contracts, record-keeping, household management, networking and the operation of the business, including liability insurance.
