The information provided in this section regarding transferability is subject to change without notice because receiving institutions determine transferability. FA 123 (formerly FA 111 and FA 121):
Painting/Drawing I 3 credits

Prerequisites: none

Transferability: UBC, UVic, UCC, SFU

An introduction to the basic fundamentals of pictorial development and practice. Students will be introduced to a variety of painting and drawing techniques, theories, and principles that constitute a work of art today. This course is designed to give students technical art training and skill development balanced with experimental processes associated with current art practices.

Note: Students with credit for FA 111 or FA 121 cannot take FA 123 for further credit.

FA 124 (formerly FA 112 and FA 122):
Painting/Drawing II 3 credits

Prerequisites: FA 123, or permission of instructor

Transferability: UBC, UVic, UCC, SFU

An advanced study of the principles and practices introduced in FA 123. Emphasis will be placed on skill development, personal expression, experimentation, and directed study.

Note: Students with credit for FA 112 or FA 122 cannot take FA 124 for further credit.

FA 131:
Sculpture I 3 credits

Prerequisites: none

Transferability: UBC, SFU, UVic, OU, TWU, OUC, UCC

An introduction to the concerns and techniques of sculpture through experimentation and exploration with contemporary and traditional materials and methods. The course defines basic sculptural terminology and assists students to analyze and understand production in the context of both individual interests and contemporary theory and practice.

FA 132:
Sculpture II 3 credits

Prerequisites: FA 131

Transferability: UBC, SFU, UVic, OU, TWU, UCC

A continuation of the investigation in FA 131 into the concerns and techniques of sculpture through experimentation and exploration with contemporary and traditional materials and methods. Students are encouraged to develop and to express their interests and strengths, as well as to establish an ability to work independently in the sculpture area.

FA 151:
Print Media I 3 credits

Prerequisites: none

Transferability: UBC, UVic, OU, TWU, OUC, UCC

Fundamental procedures of basic intaglio/relief methods are introduced including etching, collograph, linocut as well as various mono-printing techniques. Students will develop their own unique sensibilities in relation to how these processes affect creative image development. The historical, social and aesthetic ramifications of this medium and its relationship to contemporary art issues will be explored.

FA 152:
Print Media II 3 credits

Prerequisites: FA 151, or instructor’s permission

Transferability: UBC, UVic, OU, TWU, UCC

A continuation of the basics introduced in FA 151 for more creative and personal development. More advanced processes and issues are explored including advanced etching techniques, multiple plate, colour printing, mixed techniques and concepts of production.

FA 171 (formerly FA 141):
Interdisciplinary Media I 3 credits

Prerequisites: none

Transferability: UVic, UCC, OU, TWU, SFU, UBC

An introduction to media and their applications to the fine arts from a traditional and contemporary perspective. The focus of term work is the production of a series of short projects in a variety of media, to develop technical skill. The range of techniques investigated will vary and relate to both evolving artistic and general career interests. Media investigated may include woodworking, industrial design, mechanized art and electronics, art and text, and time-based art such as video, audio, performance, computer, digital media, etc.

As the semester progresses, students will be expected to investigate media as it relates to and expresses evolution in personal interests and capabilities in the area.

Note: Students with credit for FA 141 cannot take FA 171 for further credit.

FA 172 (formerly FA 142):
Interdisciplinary Media II 3 credits

Prerequisites: FA 171, or permission of instructor

Transferability: UVic, UCC, OU, TWU

A continued study of media and their applications to fine arts practices from a traditional and contemporary perspective. Students will produce independent projects in consultation with the instructor in a variety of media. The range of techniques introduced in FA 171 will relate to both artistic and general career interest. Media explored may include woodworking, mechanized art, electronics, industrial design, time-based art such as video/sound/performance art, etc. As the semester progresses, students will be investigating media that relate to personal interests and skill development.

Note: Students with credit for FA 142 cannot take FA 172 for further credit.

FA 183:
Photography I 3 credits

Prerequisites: none

Transferability: UVic, UBC, OU, TWU, SFU

An introduction to photographic techniques and aesthetics. Emphasis will be placed on camera operation and processes.

Note: Students are required to provide their own 35 mm camera.

FA 184:
Photography II 3 credits

Prerequisites: FA 183

Transferability: UVic, UBC, OU, TWU, SFU

An investigation of approaches to photography and its meaning in the context of contemporary art. An exploration of various techniques through continued darkroom instruction.

Note: Students are required to provide their own 35 mm camera.

FA 205:
Art Practices and Popular Culture I 3 credits

Prerequisites: AH 102 and one FA course

Transferability: UBC, UVic, SFU, UCC, TWU, UBC

An examination of popular culture in relation to contemporary art-making practices, emphasizing the cross-fertilization of “fine” and “popular” art in recent decades. Students will be required to complete both studio and written projects for this course.

Note: Credit cannot be obtained for both FA 205 and AH 205.

FA 210:
Art Practices and Popular Culture II 3 credits

Prerequisites: AH 102 and one FA course

Transferability: UBC, UVic, SFU, UCC

This course, which may be taken as a sequel to FA 205, continues to examine popular culture in relation to contemporary art-making practices, emphasizing the social and political role of the artist. Students will be required to complete both studio and written projects for this course.

Note: Credit cannot be obtained for both FA 210 and AH 210.

FA 321 (formerly FA 221):
Painting/Drawing III 3 credits

Prerequisites: FA 124, or permission of instructor

An advanced study of painting and drawing techniques and theories combined with other artmaking disciplines. This course emphasizes the interrelationship of different art disciplines and practices to produce individual works of art that are culturally relevant and self-expressive. Students work independently on projects designed by them in consultation with the instructor.

Note: Students with credit for FA 221 cannot take FA 321 for further credit.

FA 322 (formerly FA 222):
Painting/Drawing IV 3 credits

Prerequisites: FA 321, or permission of instructor

The interdisciplinary art form as a social entity. This course explores the complex relationship art shares with contemporary culture with a specific emphasis on advanced image-making techniques. This is a self-directed course and students will be expected to work independently on projects designed by them with the guidance of the instructor.

Note: Students with credit for FA 222 cannot take FA 322 for further credit.

FA 331 (formerly FA 231):
Sculpture III 3 credits

Prerequisites: FA 132, or permission of instructor

This course permits focused progress from an understanding of sculptural concepts, media, and methods to more complex sculptural problems. The emphasis will be on developing concepts and applications that address individual interests, ranging from technical exploration and the situation of studio practice to theoretical concerns in contemporary sculptural production.

Note: Students with credit for FA 231 cannot take FA 331 for further credit.

FA 332 (formerly FA 232):
Sculpture IV 3 credits

Prerequisites: FA 331, or permission of instructor

A continuation of FA 331 with an emphasis on independent development and the establishment of independent ideas. Studio projects are complemented by field trips and seminars.

Note: Students with credit for FA 232 cannot take FA 332 for further credit.

FA 351 (formerly FA 251):
Print Media III: Mixed Media 3 credits

Prerequisites: FA 152, or instructor’s permission

This course is designed to encourage students to explore an interdisciplinary approach to imagemaking, such as mixing print with other studio disciplines for creative and personal development. Depending on individual preferences, students are able to work in the medium of their choice. The instructor is available to guide students with the applications of basic as well as photo silkscreen techniques, etching on copper, photo-intaglio, mono-print and mono-type techniques.

Note: Students with credit for FA 251 cannot take FA 351 for further credit.

FA 352 (formerly FA 252):
Print Media IV: Advanced Mixed Media 3 credits

Prerequisites: FA 351

A continuation of the material covered in FA 351. More advanced issues and techniques are explored.

FA 371 (formerly FA 241):
Interdisciplinary Media III 3 credits

Prerequisites: FA 172, or permission of instructor

An advanced investigation of media and their application to the fine arts from a traditional and contemporary perspective. Students will investigate contemporary concerns in art-making. In that context they are encouraged to explore the potential for multimedia or interdisciplinary aspects within their studio work. This will lead to combinations of more traditional materials and methods with contemporary and electronic media such as kinetics, audio, video, digital, and Internet elements.

The students will broaden both their personal interests and their production skills within the art form while defining how those interests and skills relate to the broad art historical, social, and cultural landscape.

Note: Students with credit for FA 241 cannot take FA 371 for further credit.

FA 372 (formerly FA 242):
Interdisciplinary Media IV 3 credits

Prerequisites: FA 371, or permission of instructor

A continuation of the applications learned in FA 371 with special emphasis on independent projects related to contemporary art issues and practices. The students will broaden both their personal interests and their production skills within the art form while, at the same time, defining how those interests and skills relate to the broad art historical, social, and cultural landscape.

Increasing emphasis is placed on documentation of art work and the preparation of a high-quality student calibre portfolio.

Note: Students with credit for FA 242 cannot take FA 372 for further credit.

FA 383 (formerly FA 283):
Photography III 3 credits

Prerequisites: FA 184

A continuation of more advanced methods and experimental techniques of photographic practice through individual/group projects. Students will also be introduced to photographic theory, examining the debates and developments within contemporary culture.

Note: Students with credit for FA 283 cannot take FA 383 for further credit.

FA 384 (formerly FA 284):
Photography IV 3 credits

Prerequisites: FA 383

A further study of photographic art practice and theory. The primary focus will be on personal project development. Students will be encouraged to research their chosen area of interest to create a cohesive body of work in relation to their critical knowledge and understanding of the contemporary art issues discussed in class.

Note: Students with credit for FA 284 cannot take FA 384 for further credit.

Independent Study

In courses of individual study in various media under the direction of faculty, students have the opportunity to pursue studies of particular interest according to their chosen area(s) of concentration.
