This course introduces students to the basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Mandarin Chinese, and to Chinese culture.
MAND 102

Introduction to Mandarin II
Prerequisite(s): MAND 101 or instructor's permission
Students will build on basic skills acquired in Mandarin 101 and continue to develop oral, listening, reading, and writing skills and to further explore Chinese culture.
MAND 201

Intermediate Mandarin I
Prerequisite(s): MAND 102
This course is a continuation of MAND 102. Students will practice and enhance all four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing developed in MAND 102 and will acquire additional grammatical structures and vocabulary for achieving intermediate proficiency in conversation, reading, writing and translation as well as further understanding of the Chinese culture and customs. Composition in Mandarin is introduced. At the end of MAND 201, the student is expected to be able to use all the basic sentence patterns in modern Mandarin and to know about 1000 -- 1200 Mandarin words.
MAND 202

Intermediate Mandarin II
Prerequisite(s): MAND 201
This course is a continuation of MAND 201 with emphasis on practising and enhancing the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing developed in MAND 201. Through the course, students will acquire additional grammatical structures and vocabulary for achieving intermediate proficiency in conversation, reading, writing, and translation, obtain further understanding of the Chinese culture and customs, and learn approximately 200-300 new words. Composition in Chinese will be strengthened.
MAND 210

Chinese Culture & Civilization
Prerequisite(s): None
Pre- or corequisite(s): Mandarin 101 is recommended
This course offers students an introduction to Chinese culture; part of the course consists of a study tour in China. The tour will give students an opportunity to explore historic sites, participate in Chinese cultural activities, and learn about China and its people through a unique home-stay experience.
MAND 301

Advanced Mandarin I
Prerequisite(s): Mandarin 201 and Mandarin 202
Students will use the communicative approach to reinforce and expand their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with a focus on the first two linguistic skills. They will study more complex grammatical structures and vocabulary as well as a variety of topics on social and cultural issues. By the end of the course, students will have achieved proficiency in both listening and speaking in various social and cultural contexts.
MAND 302

Advanced Mandarin II
Prerequisite(s): Mandarin 301
Mandarin 302 is a continuation of Mandarin 301. Students will continue to use a holistic approach to develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills of the Chinese language with a special focus on the last two linguistic skills. They will continue to consolidate their language knowledge with more complex grammatical structures, phrases, and idioms. They will gain more writing skills with various forms in Chinese social and cultural contexts. By the end of the course, students will have achieved proficiency in both reading and writing, with more sophisticated skills and advanced usages.
