Philosophy major students who have excelled in their program have the opportunity to enhance their credential with the Bachelor of Arts Philosophy Honours. This option can raise the profile of the student’s academic transcript and demonstrates a higher level of commitment and proficiency over the normal major.
Entrance requirements
Students wishing to apply to the Philosophy Honours must satisfy the continuance requirements of the Bachelor of Arts and the Philosophy major. Additionally, they must have the following at the time of application to the Honours:
Minimum CGPA of 3.33.
24 credits in upper-level Philosophy courses, including PHIL 300, with a minimum GPA of 3.50 in those courses.
How to apply
Once students have satisfied the entrance requirements they may apply to the Philosophy Honours program. The application must be submitted to the Philosophy Department Honours Coordinator.
The application for entry into the program must be signed by a faculty member willing to supervise PHIL 495. Students must secure this commitment prior to applying for the Philosophy Honours.
Program outline
The Philosophy Honours can be completed within the 120 credits required for the BA.
Students must take an additional three credits of upper-level philosophy above the 30 upper-level credits required of the major for a total 33 credits.
These 33 credits must satisfy all the requirements of the major and include PHIL 495.
Note: PHIL 495 may be taken only after a student has successfully applied for entry into the Honours program.
To be eligible to graduate with the Philosophy Honours, students must have completed the specific course requirements noted above and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.50 in all upper-level philosophy courses used to complete the major and the Honours (33 credits).
