Halq’eméylem 101 is an introductory course in the Halq'eméylem language (Upriver dialect). Students will do work on important aspects of pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. Students will work with an instructor and with an Elder fluent in the language, and will use audiovisual techniques, drill patterns, flashcards, pictures and videotapes. The course will also include linguistic instruction in grammar and pronunciation, including relevant aspects of the International Phonetic Alphabet. At the end of the course, students will have learned between 450 and 500 high-frequency words in the language, and will have had an overview of the pronunciation and the major grammatical structures of the language.

Halq'eméylem Language II

Halq’eméylem 102 is a continuation of HALQ 101. At the end of the course, students will have learned an additional 400 to 500 high-frequency vocabulary items, and will have mastered the entire sound system of the language and the major grammatical structures in some detail. Students will also have begun studying texts in the language.

Intermediate Halq'eméylem I

Halq’eméylem 201 is an intermediate course in the Halq'eméylem language. At the end of the course, students will have acquired an additional 450-500 vocabulary items (for a total, with prerequisites, of approximately 1500 vocabulary items). Students will have gained control of all of the major inflectional endings in the language, and will be expected to translate extended texts without vocabulary aids. The course will also cover issues in dialectal variation in Upriver speech, and comparison between Upriver vs. Downriver and Island dialects. The course is designed to be challenging and fun, and the students who complete it will have a strong, solid, foundation in the language.

Halq’eméylem 202 is the second of two intermediate courses in the Halq’eméylem language (Upriver dialect). At the end of the course, students will have acquired an additional 450-500 vocabulary items (for a total, with prerequisites, of approximately 2000 vocabulary items). The course will focus on two areas: (i) advanced texts, where students will work with existing texts, and in addition will work on the collection and transcription of texts with native-speaking Elders; (ii) conversational practice, including role-playing, speech presentations, and a focus on topics for everyday use of the language.

Advanced Upriver Halq’eméylem I

Students will develop their linguistic skills and mastery of Upriver Halq’eméylem at an advanced level. They will review and expand their knowledge of syntax, phonology, semantics, and lexicology with respect to Upriver Halq’eméylem and Stó:lô worldview.

Advanced Upriver Halq’eméylem II: Introduction to Storytelling

Students will be introduced to written and oral format of Sxwoxwiyam vs Sqweqwel and will explore and apply the rhetorical devices such as metaphor, repetition, use of parallel lines, whilst examining social-cultural connections to land and people.

Advanced Halq'eméylem Translation Skills
Prerequisite(s): HALQ 302.

Students will learn to produce appropriate and effective translations of Halq'eméylem into English. Students will enhance their translation skills through practice with a variety of materials and working with a range of different examples of usage, from traditional to modern.
HALQ 715

Advanced Halq'eméylem Transcription
Prerequisite(s): HALQ 302 and HALQ 710.

Transcription into Upriver Halq'eméylem, from simple to complex levels. Students will examine and apply Stó:lō phonemic and phonetic orthographies within their written assignments. Students will also advance their sentence development using correct word order within various contexts and Stó:lō social-cultural relevance.

Halq'eméylem Teaching Methodologies
Prerequisite(s): HALQ 302, HALQ 710, and HALQ 715.

An examination of the major theoretical and practical applications within the teaching of second language learners of Upriver Halq'eméylem. Students will review and expand their knowledge of teaching methodologies pertaining to various age, levels, and types of First Nation language programming, such as beginners, intermediate, advanced, or immersion settings, with the inclusion of Stó:lō worldview.

Halq'eméylem Curriculum Development

Examines the major frameworks in curriculum development for learners of additional languages. Students will also expand their knowledge in curriculum development employed by the forefront leaders of First Nation language revitalists. They will gain practical skills in curriculum development and implementation, pertaining to the Upriver Halq'eméylem language, with the inclusion of Stó:lō worldview.

Advanced Halq'eméylem Seminar

An exploration of project planning, development ideas, and pathways for the final Halq'eméylem graduate program capstone. Students will examine planning strategies, protocols, methods, and field activities that are associated with Indigenous language revitalization and preservation. Students will build the framework and identify resources needed for the capstone project.

Explores strategies to develop a higher level of Upriver Halq'eméylem oral communication and literacy, focusing on reading and writing, comprehension, and proficiency. Within an experiential learning environment, students will employ a variety of language software programs to enhance Upriver Halq'eméylem language acquisition.

Halq'eméylem Capstone
Prerequisite(s): HALQ 724 and HALQ 725.

For this capstone course, students will reflect on a variety of topics and themes drawn from discussions and readings throughout previous Halq’eméylem courses. Topics may include Upriver Halq’eméylem translation and transcription, practical and phonetic orthography, interlinear glossing, curriculum units, teaching methodology, storytelling, or Stó:lō relationship to the land. Students will do independent research under the direction of their supervisor.
