English for Academic Preparation


English language proficiency requirements

Students registering in post-secondary level courses (numbered 100 to 499) will be required to meet the English language entrance proficiency requirements. Students in ELS or the University Foundations programs can register in those courses identified in the University Foundations program with lower levels of language proficiency.

Please note that not all courses are offered every semester.

EAP 054

6 credits

Writing for Academic Success: High Intermediate Level

Prerequisite(s): One of the following: ESL WG44, or placement by ESL assessment, or (one of the following test scores: IELTS [Academic] score of 4.5 with no band below 4.0; TOEFL iBT score of 42 or higher with no section below 12; EIKEN Grade 2; or CLBPT Overall 6 with no skill less than 5). Submission of other test scores will be considered.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

Simple sentence structure and variation and an introduction to complex and compound sentences. Basic paragraph structure and organization for some common paragraph development styles. Includes intermediate level reading, vocabulary, and speaking/listening skills related to writing proficiency.

Note: Students with credit for ESL WG54 cannot take this course for further credit.

EAP 056

3 credits

Academic Interactive Communications: High Intermediate Level

Prerequisite(s): One of the following: ESL S46, or placement by ESL assessment, or (one of the following test scores: IELTS [Academic] score of 4.5 with no band below 4.0; TOEFL iBT score of 42 or higher with no section below 12; EIKEN Grade 2; or CLBPT Overall 6 with no skill less than 5). Submission of other test scores will be considered.

Oral grammar, pronunciation, and functional phrasing to enable English language learners to interact successfully with English speakers in common, non-specialized situations within an academic setting.

Note: Students with credit for ESL S56 cannot take this course for further credit.

EAP 058

6 credits

Reading for Academic Success: High Intermediate Level

Prerequisite(s): One of the following: ESL RV48, or placement by ESL assessment, or (one of the following test scores: IELTS [Academic] score of 4.5 with no band below 4.0; TOEFL iBT score of 42 or higher with no section below 12; EIKEN Grade 2; or CLBPT Overall 6 with no skill less than 5). Submission of other test scores will be considered.

This course will focus on developing recognition of the organization of texts through use of simple texts and graphics (both authentic and simplified). Students will continue to build their knowledge of high-frequency general vocabulary.

EAP 064

6 credits

Writing for Success: Advanced Level

Prerequisite(s): One of the following: EAP 054 (formerly ESL WG 054), or placement by ESL assessment, or (one of the following test scores: IELTS [Academic] score of 5.0 with no band below 4.5; TOEFL iBT score of 52 or higher with no section below 14; EIKEN Grade 2A; or CLBPT Overall 7 with no skill less than 6). Submission of other test scores will be considered.

Incorporating paragraph structure and organization into a wider variety of paragraph development styles common to academic writing. An introduction to multi-paragraph (essay) writing. Writing clearly and effectively using a variety of sentence types.

EAP 066

3 credits

Academic Interactive Communications: Advanced Level

Prerequisite(s): One of the following: EAP 056 (formerly ESL S56), or placement by ESL assessment, or (one of the following test scores: IELTS [Academic] score of 5.0 with no band below 4.5; TOEFL iBT score of 52 or higher with no section below 14; EIKEN Grade 2A; or CLBPT Overall 7 with no skill less than 6). Submission of other test scores will be considered.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

Interaction functions in both social and non-social situations within academic settings. A focus on accuracy in speech and listening for details. An introduction to conversation management skills. Pronunciation strategies based on learner needs.

Reading for Academic Success: Advanced Level

Prerequisite(s): One of the following: EAP 058 (formerly ESL RV58), or (ESL R50 and ESL V53), or placement by ESL assessment, or (one of the following test scores: IELTS [Academic] score of 5.0 with no band below 4.5; TOEFL iBT score of 52 or higher with no section below 14; EIKEN Grade 2A; or CLBPT Overall 7 with no skill less than 6). Submission of other test scores will be considered.

Reading and vocabulary comprehension strategies at an advanced learning level for academic, personal, or career purposes. Focus on the development of critical reading skills and comprehension of short fictional and non-fictional material. An introduction to literary analysis.

EAP 070

3 credits

Reading for Academic Success: University Foundation Level

Prerequisite(s): One of the following: EAP 068 (formerly ESL RV68), or (ESL R60 and ESL V63), or placement by ESL assessment, or (one of the following test scores: ELTS [Academic] score of 5.5 or higher with a minimum band score of 5.0; TOEFL iBT score of 71 or higher with no section below 16; EIKEN Grade 2A with CSE Total Score 2400 or with Stage 1 total score result 65; PTE score of 46 with 44 in writing; LPI essay score of 18 [level 3]; or CLBPT 7 overall with no skill less than 7). Submission of other test scores will be considered.

Reading strategies for academic and career purposes for learners who may already be taking a post-secondary course or training program. A focus on further development of critical reading analysis, comprehension strategies, and reading speed, with texts of various lengths.

Note: Students with credit for ESL R70 cannot take this course for further credit.

3 credits

Academic Vocabulary: University Foundation Level

Prerequisite(s): One of the following: EAP 068 (formerly ESL RV68), or placement by ESL assessment, or (one of the following test scores: ELTS [Academic] score of 5.5 or higher with a minimum band score of 5.0; TOEFL iBT score of 71 or higher with no section below 16; EIKEN Grade 2A with CSE Total Score 2400 or with Stage 1 total score result 65; PTE score of 46 with 44 in writing; LPI essay score of 18 [level 3]; or CLBPT 7 overall with no skill less than 7). Higher level vocabulary and phrasal verbs (idioms) for students who already have a good knowledge of those that are commonly used. Decoding strategies will be further developed. Suitable for students who already may be taking a post-secondary academic or training course.

Planning and writing short, academic essays that incorporate quotations and paraphrases using common citation styles. Revising and editing for clear and effective written communication.

Foundations of English for Business

Prerequisite(s): One of the following: (EAP 054 [formerly ESL WG54], EAP 056 [formerly ESL S56], and EAP 058 [formerly ESL RV58]), or placement by ESL assessment, or (one of the following test scores: ELTS [Academic] score of 5.5 or higher with a minimum band score of 5.0; TOEFL iBT score of 71 or higher with no section below 16; EIKEN Grade 2A with CSE Total Score 2400 or with Stage 1 total score result 65; PTE score of 46 with 44 in writing; LPI essay score of 18 [level 3]; or CLBPT 7 overall with no skill less than 7). For students intending to pursue a credential related to business or currently working in the field, including small or new businesses. Written and oral communication and interactive expectations common in business culture. Professional individual and group presentations.

Focus on language and communication skills required for effective collaboration and participation in group work and team projects required for academic and professional success. Introduces negotiation and conflict resolution skills, as well as intercultural verbal and non-verbal communication skills, personal identity, culture disorientation, cross-cultural adjustment, and effective cross-cultural collaboration in group projects and teamwork.
