Japanese


English language proficiency requirements

Students registering in post-secondary level courses (numbered 100 to 499) will be required to meet the English language entrance proficiency requirements. Students in ELS or the University Foundations programs can register in those courses identified in the University Foundations program with lower levels of language proficiency.

Native or near-native speakers of the language should contact the Modern Languages department for proper placement.The department reserves the right to place students in the course most appropriate to their abilities.

Please note that not all courses are offered every semester.

JAPN 101

Japanese Language I

Prerequisite(s): None.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

A comprehensive introductory course in the Japanese language for beginners to gain beginning-level communicative competency and form a solid foundation for further studies. Four skills in Japanese will be practiced: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

JAPN 102

3 credits

Japanese Language II

Prerequisite(s): One of Japanese 11, JAPN 101, or assessment of the department.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

Four skills in Japanese (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) will be practiced with adequate vocabulary, grammar, and cultural knowledge.

JAPN 103

3 credits

Japanese Study Tour: Language and Culture

Prerequisite(s): None.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

Designed for students who have little or no knowledge of Japanese, this course offers students an introduction to Japanese language and culture through a study tour of Japan. Includes in-class lectures and a study tour experience.

JAPN 201

3 credits

Intermediate Japanese I

Prerequisite(s): One of Japanese 12, JAPN 102, or assessment of the department.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

Designed for students who have prior knowledge of the Japanese language, mainly through Japanese Language I and Japanese Language II, or equivalent courses. The course will advance students' fluency and accuracy in both speech and listening comprehension, develop their reading and writing skills, and increase their understanding of modern Japanese culture through authentic materials.

Intermediate Japanese II

Prerequisite(s): JAPN 201.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

Designed for students who have completed Intermediate Japanese I or equivalent courses. Students will advance their fluency and accuracy in both speech and listening comprehension, develop reading and writing skills, and increase their understanding of modern Japanese culture through authentic materials. Students will develop the skills to use Japanese in both social and workplace situations

Introduction to Japanese Society and Culture

Prerequisite(s): None.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): JAPN 101 or Japanese 11.

Overview of Japan’s geography, history, customs, annual events, religion, economy, and social issues. Compares and contrasts Japanese society with Canadian society. Through reading, discussion, and writing students will develop an understanding of elements of Japanese culture. The course will be taught in both English and Japanese.

JAPN 301

4 credits

Intermediate Japanese III

Prerequisite(s): JAPN 202.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

As an integrated course, four skills of the Japanese language (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) are reinforced to an advanced level. Authenticity of verbal and written communications in particular cultural situations is pursued.

Intermediate Japanese IV

Prerequisite(s): JAPN 301.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

The second of a two-semester sequence of 300-level Japanese courses. This course aims to develop the four communication skills of the Japanese language (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), as well as conversation strategies. Focus is on authenticity of verbal and written communications in particular cultural situations.
