English Honours

This section specifies the honours discipline requirements only. Please refer to the Bachelor of Arts section for information on additional requirements.

Note: Entry is restricted to students with a GPA of 3.50 or better, calculated on a minimum of 60 credits of coursework applicable to the BA. The program is recommended for students who intend to pursue studies at the MA or PhD level. Students must apply online directly to the department.

Lower-level requirements: 21 credits

• ENGL 105
• Three 100-level credits from ENGL 104 or higher
• ENGL 200, 201, and 202
• Six credits from ENGL 208-298

Upper-level requirements: 44 credits

• Eight credits from ENGL 301, 304, 306, 308, 309, 310, 312, 316, 318, or 319
• Eight credits from ENGL 321-363, 368, 369, or 490
• 12 credits from ENGL 301-363, 380-382, 384, or 403
• Four credits from ENGL 364, 366, or 401D
• Four credits from ENGL 370, 375, or 376
• ENGL 491
• ENGL 492

Breadth requirements

Within the 65 credits required for the Honours, students must complete the following:

• Canadian Literature requirement: one of ENGL 240, 354, 356, 358, 360, or 362
• Global Literature requirement: one of ENGL 228, 245, 367, 369, 380, or 384

Other requirements

GPA requirements

A GPA of 3.50 or higher, calculated on all English courses required for the honours program, must be maintained until completion of the program.

Course requirements

Students must complete 44 upper-level credits to fulfill the requirements for the English Honours. Lower-level requirements for both the English Honours and English major are identical, but students intending to complete an honours program should be aware that upper-level requirements for the English Honours are specific to the honours program and constitute the following:

Language requirement

Students must demonstrate proficiency in another language. This may be accomplished by completing 6 credits of coursework in a language with a GPA of 3.00 or higher in the department of Modern Languages (MOLA) at UFV or by submitting evidence of comparable achievement at a recognized post-secondary institution. The English Honours Committee may, in some cases, determine proficiency by administering a language proficiency assessment with the assistance of a qualified specialist in the language the candidate chooses for evaluation.

Residency

Please check the Bachelor of Arts residency section of the calendar for how many upper-level credits must be completed at UFV in order to graduate with this program.
