An Introduction to Mennonite Studies

This course is an interdisciplinary introduction to the Mennonite experience. While this course incorporates a general historical framework, it will draw on sociology, economics, religious studies, political science, ethnology, geography, fine arts, and other disciplines.

Mennonite Development and Relief Organizations
Prerequisite(s): 45 university-level credits; MENN 100 is highly recommended
Mennonites have been deeply involved in providing social services in the Fraser Valley, and in providing relief efforts around the globe. This service is provided with a particular perspective on our obligations to our neighbors, a particular philosophical position with respect to what citizenship means in the world today. In this course, guest speakers from Mennonite development and relief organizations (eg. Mennonite Benevolent Society, Mennonite Housing Society, Mennonite Central Committee, Mennonite Economic Development Associates, and Mennonite Disaster and Relief Services) will provide an overview of their work, including its philosophical underpinnings. Students will analyze and evaluate this work through a combination of dialogue with the organizations’ representatives, in-class lectures, various readings and written work, and through field work, which will be a part of the course requirements.
