Plumbing and Piping


English Language Requirements

Students registering in post-secondary level courses (numbered 100 to 499) will be required to meet the English language entrance proficiency requirements. Students in ESL or the University Foundations programs can register in those courses identified in the University Foundations program with lower levels of language proficiency.

PLMB 110

2 credits

Safety and WHMIS

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Plumbing and Piping certificate program

This course is an introduction to the proper safety procedures and regulations used in the piping trades and the proper use and handling of chemicals on work sites. This course will provide students with the ability to use safe work practices on the job site. They will learn and use the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), and learn to identify fire hazards and how to select appropriate fire extinguishers for various types of fires.

This is the first of seven courses that must be passed to receive a Plumbing and Piping certificate.

PLMB 111

4 credits

Plumbing Fundamentals

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Plumbing and Piping certificate program.

This course introduces students to the scientific theory, calculations, and problem-solving techniques in the piping trades. There will be an emphasis on standard measurement units and conversions.

PLMB 112

6 credits

Tools and Materials

Prerequisite(s): PLMB 110.

This course introduces the tools and common materials used in the piping trades. Students will learn to select and safely use the appropriate tools and materials through practical projects designed for work applications.

PLMB 113

3 credits

Codes, Regulations, and Blueprints

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Plumbing and Piping certificate program.

This course introduces the piping industry codes, regulations, and language of mechanical blueprints. Students will learn to read and interpret the piping symbols used on mechanical blueprint drawings, identify relevant codes and standards, and use workplace documentation.

PLMB 114

9 credits

DWV, Water, and Fixtures

Prerequisite(s): PLMB 112 and PLMB 113.

This course applies local codes to properly size, install, and test drainage, venting, and water pipes and fittings. This includes the basic design, operation, and installation of drain, waste, venting, potable, hot water, and gas systems.

PLMB 115

2 credits

Survey

Prerequisite(s): PLMB 114

This course demonstrates the methods of using survey equipment, precision, accuracy standards, and specifications for field procedures for horizontal and vertical surveys used in the piping trades.

This is the sixth of seven courses that must be passed to receive a Plumbing and Piping certificate.

PLMB 116

1 credit

Rigging and Welding

Prerequisite(s): PLMB 113

This course provides the basic methods of welding and cutting of metal materials and the proper use of rigging on work sites.

This is the seventh of seven courses that must be passed to receive a Plumbing and Piping certificate.
