Qualifying Studies

Qualifying Studies (QS) is for students who need to upgrade their education to gain admission to UFV certificate, diploma, or degree programs; are undecided about their post-secondary goals; have missed a university program admission deadline; have failed to meet the continuance requirements of a UFV program; or are studying for general interest.

Each QS student is required to meet with an Academic Advisor in the Advising Centre early in the academic journey to develop an education plan. Developing a plan with an academic advisor will help a student:

• understand QS requirements and regulations
• refine personal educational goals and understand available choices
• identify which developmental-level courses (courses numbered below 100) and/or undergraduate courses (courses numbered 100 and above) are needed to meet the entrance requirements for the program(s) of choice
• identify which undergraduate courses may be applied to the program(s) of choice at a later date, and
• ensure the transferability of courses to other post-secondary institutions, if the goal is to enter a program at another institution.

It is recommended that QS students call the Advising Centre at 604-864-4674 (Abbotsford) or 604-795-2808 (Chilliwack), or email advising@ufv.ca to arrange an appointment with an academic advisor during the first semester at UFV.

Entrance requirements

QS students must meet the following minimum entrance requirements:

1. B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent or minimum of 19 years of age before the first day of classes.
2. Applicants must meet the Entry-level English language proficiency requirement. For details on how this requirement may be met, see the English language proficiency requirement section of the calendar.
3. For students under 19 years of age, admission is conditional upon B.C. secondary school graduation. Proof of graduation is due at the end of the first week in August for the Fall semester. B.C. Grade 12 students can arrange at their schools to have transcripts sent directly to UFV.

When to apply

Applications are accepted for entrance to the Fall, Winter, and Summer semesters. For application deadlines, see Specific intake application process.

How to apply

1. Apply online at ufv.ca/admissions/admissions/apply.

   Additional documents required for a complete application:

   • Proof of graduation (an official high school transcript) if you are under 19 and no longer in school.
   • A transcript is recommended for students over 19, in order to meet course prerequisites.

   No documents need to be submitted by students currently in Grade 12, until final grades are available at the beginning of August.

   If a UFV Placement Test, English as a Second Language (ESL) assessment score, or Upgrading and University Preparation (UUP) assessment score is required, arrangements should be made to write it early in the year.

2. Upon admission to UFV, a student is provided with registration information. Because mandatory advising is a QS requirement, early on the academic journey, a student should contact the Advising Centre to set up an appointment with an academic advisor to develop an education plan, select courses, and plan a timetable. 3. For students under 19 years of age, admission is conditional upon B.C. secondary school graduation. Proof of graduation is due at the end of the first week in August for the Fall semester. B.C. Grade 12 students can arrange at their schools to have transcripts sent directly to UFV.

   Note: It is essential that students provide their Provincial Education Number (PEN) on the application form.

Basis for admission decision

Applicants who meet the entrance requirements will be admitted in order of their application date. This date is set when an application, all required documentation, and the application fee have been submitted.

Undergraduate continuance

QS students must meet the terms set out in UFV’s Undergraduate Continuance policy (92). Students enrolled in undergraduate courses (courses numbered 100 or above) must maintain an undergraduate Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 2.00 to remain enrolled in Good Academic Standing at UFV. Failure to meet the minimum CGPA requirement will result in restrictions on registration and may eventually lead to academic suspension from undergraduate studies at UFV. Students on Academic Warning or Academic Probation are limited to registering in 10 credits.
