An introduction to elementary Spanish. Emphasis is on listening, comprehension, and oral practice through grammar, vocabulary building, elementary readings, and an introduction to Hispanic culture. The seminar is an integral part of the course to increase understanding and speaking skills.

Spanish Language II
Prerequisite(s): SPAN 101 or instructor's permission
Oral and written skills are developed through vocabulary, grammar, and idioms. Hispanic culture, pronunciation, comprehension, and writing are emphasized. The seminar is an integral part of the course to increase understanding and speaking skills.
Note: This course is equivalent to CEFR Level A2.
SPAN 201

Intermediate Spanish I
Prerequisite(s): Spanish 12 or SPAN 102.
Continues development of language skills with emphasis on oral competence, vocabulary enrichment and Hispanic cultural knowledge through grammar review, conversation practice in class and seminars, and discussions about readings, music, and movies.
Note: SPAN 201 and 202 together comprise the intermediate level of Spanish, equivalent to CEFR level B2. Either course may be taken first.
SPAN 202

Intermediate Spanish II
Prerequisite(s): Spanish 12 or SPAN 102.
Continues development of language skills with emphasis on written competence through improvement of grammar, style, vocabulary, translation skills, and cultural competence applied through natural writing mirroring oral communication practiced in class and seminars.
Note: SPAN 201 and 202 together comprise the intermediate level of Spanish, equivalent to CEFR level B2. Either course may be taken first.

Prerequisite(s): (SPAN 101 or SPAN 102) and departmental permission.
An opportunity for students to improve their Spanish through practical experience in a workplace. Usually requires a minimum of 120 hours paid or volunteer work experience entirely, or almost entirely, in Spanish. With permission, this course may be taken concurrently with another practicum or internship.

Advanced Spanish I - Oral Communication
Prerequisite(s): (SPAN 201 and SPAN 202) or (departmental permission)
Through this course, students can achieve an advanced level of Spanish oral communication, improving vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Grammatical explanation and written work help to distinguish oral and written communication norms. Students should expect frequent interaction, individual and group presentations, class discussions and exposure to Spanish language and culture through a variety of media.

Advanced Spanish II - Composition
Prerequisite(s): SPAN 201 and SPAN 202
This course offers advanced study of written Spanish, including sentence, paragraph and composition structure, grammar, and sensitivity to differences in style, tone, and levels of language from colloquial to formal. Students will build accuracy and speed in reading and writing Spanish in different styles and contexts.

Special Topics in Spanish Language
Prerequisite(s): SPAN 201, SPAN 202, and one 300-level SPAN course.
Topics will vary and may include, but are not limited to, Spanish for business, Spanish for health care, slang and street Spanish, creative writing in Spanish, and Spanish for NGOs. The course is taught in Spanish.
SPAN 330

Special Topics in Hispanic Culture
Prerequisite(s): SPAN 201, SPAN 202, and one 300-level SPAN course.
Topics will vary and may include, but are not limited to, music in Latin America, social conflict and testimonial literature, film and society, the cultural impact of religion, literature and history, and aspects of popular culture. The course is taught in Spanish.
SPAN 340

Spanish Translation
Prerequisite(s): SPAN 201, SPAN 202, and one 300-level SPAN course.
A practical, advanced-level course that introduces different aspects of translation theory and practice. Students will improve their control of the language by transferring concepts from one language to the other and reinforce their knowledge and use of the language and culture by translating and analyzing different texts.
SPAN 350

Spanish Immersion
Prerequisite(s): SPAN 201 and SPAN 202 or equivalent, plus Letter of Permission.
This course enables students to receive credit for a course completed through study abroad at a Spanish language university. The topics will vary with the courses available at the partner institution. This course allows students to pursue advanced topics in Spanish that are not offered at UFV.
