Explore the skills required to effectively communicate verbally and non-verbally in adult care settings with individuals with dementia, other individuals living within the care setting, family members, and the health care team. Cultural diversity will also be explored. Validation Therapy will be highlighted to understand communication within dementia care.

An introduction to practicum placements to prepare students for the care setting and gaining an understanding of the organization and agency mission, goals, objectives, and strategies. Students will learn how to respond to and stay safe in an emergency situation. Students will also learn responsibilities and accountability in relation to practicum.

Focus is on designing programs and analyzing outcomes to ensure residents meet specific goals. Students will implement a variety of recreation participation activities and leisure education with meaningful outcomes for residents in a care environment. Student will use best practices for selecting activities, engaging residents from a variety of life stages, cultures, and conditions in individual, small, and large group programs.

Focus is on exploring the adaptation and modification of programs and activities as they relate to an individual with physical and cognitive impairments. Students will complete a job search, prepare employment documents, and participate in interview activities prior to practicum start. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how leisure activities contribute to wellness in a care facility within their portfolio. Under the direction of a supervisor, students will assess client satisfaction and interest levels and compare them to overall activity goals. Professionalism, team work, and communication skills will be emphasized while students apply skills and theories learned in courses.
