Activity Assistant


English language proficiency requirements

Students registering in post-secondary level courses (numbered 100 to 499) will be required to meet the English language entrance proficiency requirements. Students in ELS or the University Foundations programs can register in those courses identified in the University Foundations program with lower levels of language proficiency.

Please note that not all courses are offered every semester.

Prepares students with theoretical foundations and applicable knowledge including key terms and concepts, roles and responsibilities, policies and procedures specific to the role. Examines ethical and legal responsibilities within the care setting.

Wellness and Well-Being in Activity

Pre- or corequisite(s): B or better in ACTA 10.

This introduction to wellness and well-being for an adult living in a care setting assists learners in understanding activity design and the individual in a holistic manner. Topics include exploring the six dimensions of wellness and making a connection between activity and leisure for individuals.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills within Adult Care Settings

Pre- or corequisite(s): B or better in ACTA 20.

Explore the skills required to effectively communicate verbally and non-verbally in adult care settings with individuals with dementia, other individuals living within the care setting, family members, and the health care team. Cultural diversity will also be explored. Validation Therapy will be highlighted to understand communication within dementia care.

Understanding Older Adults

Explore societal and physical challenges facing the aging population. Learn the theories of disengagement, activity (substitution), and continuity. Activity and wellness will be studied to promote healthy aging.

Practicum Orientation

Pre- or corequisite(s): B or better in ACTA 40.

An introduction to practicum placements to prepare students for the care setting and gaining an understanding of the organization and agency mission, goals, objectives, and strategies. Students will learn how to respond to and stay safe in an emergency situation. Students will also learn responsibilities and accountability in relation to practicum.

Activity Design and Implementation

Pre- or corequisite(s): B or better in ACTA 50.

Focus is on designing programs and analyzing outcomes to ensure residents meet specific goals. Students will implement a variety of recreation participation activities and leisure education with meaningful outcomes for residents in a care environment. Student will use best practices for selecting activities, engaging residents from a variety of life stages, cultures, and conditions in individual, small, and large group programs.

Activity Adaptation for Physical and Cognitive Changes

Corequisite(s): None

Pre- or corequisite(s): B or better in ACTA 60.

Focus is on exploring the adaptation and modification of programs and activities as they relate to an individual with physical and cognitive impairments. Topics included are barriers to participation, strategies to promote in-the-moment accommodations, and types of activities to offer to individuals with cognitive and physical impairments.

Responding to and Managing Responsive Behaviours

Pre- or corequisite(s): B or better in ACTA 70.

Further examines responsive behaviours of older adults with dementia. Define responsive behaviours, understand why they may occur within the care setting, and assist Activity Assistants in developing strategies to de-escalate specific behaviours.

Observational Practicum I

Pre- or corequisite(s): B or better in ACTA 50.

An introduction to the Activity Assistant role through observation within a care facility. The focus will be on the observation and demonstration of professional behaviors and effective communication while applying skills learned in prior courses.

Practicum II

Prerequisite(s): None

Corequisite(s): None

Pre- or corequisite(s): B or better in ACTA 80.

Students will complete a job search, prepare employment documents, and participate in interview activities prior to practicum start. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how leisure activities contribute to wellness in a care facility within their portfolio. Under the direction of a supervisor, students will assess client satisfaction and interest levels and compare them to overall activity goals. Professionalism, team work, and communication skills will be emphasized while students apply skills and theories learned in courses.
