Teaching English as a Second Language


English language proficiency requirements

Students registering in post-secondary level courses (numbered 100 to 499) will be required to meet the English language entrance proficiency requirements. Students in ELS or the University Foundations programs can register in those courses identified in the University Foundations program with lower levels of language proficiency.


Please note that not all courses are offered every semester.

TESL 400

4 credits

Foundations of Second Language Education

Prerequisite(s): 60-university-level credits or permission of the Adult Education department.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

An introductions to the historical, linguistic, and pedagogical principles, theories and research informing TESL as a field of practice.

Note: Students with credit for TESL 300 cannot take this course for further credit.


TESL 408

4 credits

Applied Linguistics in Second Language Education

Prerequisite(s): 60-university-level credits or permission of the Adult Education department.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

Students will apply key principles of applied linguistics to second language education (SLE) with a focus on grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, pronunciation, and pragmatics. Students will be exposed to a range of relevant teaching strategies.

TESL 410

4 credits

Teaching a Second Language

Prerequisite(s): 60-university-level credits or permission of the Adult Education department.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): TESL 400 (formerly TESL 300) and TESL 408.

Students will develop teaching methods and learn the concepts and skills a teacher requires to design sequenced lesson plans with materials for effective second language instruction.

Note: Students with credit for TESL 310 cannot take this course for further credit.


TESL 420

4 credits

Curriculum and Assessment in Second Language Education

Prerequisite(s): None.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): TESL 400 (formerly TESL 300), TESL 408, and TESL 410 (formerly TESL 310).

Students will design, align, and use curriculum, materials, assessments, and language standards to foster learning in second language education. Students develop expertise in the use of the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CBL) in curriculum and assessment.

TESL 433

4 credits

Second Language Education Practicum

Prerequisite(s): Permission of the Adult Education department.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): TESL 400 (formerly TESL 300), TESL 408, TESL 410 (formerly TESL 310), and TESL 420.

This practicum component of the TESL certificate enables students to apply their studies of theory and methodology of second language teaching and learning in an approved ESL instructional setting.

Note: Students with credit for TESL 333 cannot take this course for further credit.

Note: Evidence must be provided to the department of 20 hours of volunteer experience in a TESL setting to enroll in this course.
