The department of Geography and the Environment provides an inclusive learning environment through local and global hands-on experience using innovative teaching and learning approaches. Our interdisciplinary, diverse course offerings and undergraduate research experiences develop employable skills and post graduate success.

The department of Geography and the Environment (GATE) invites applications for a tenure track (Assistant Professor) position in Urban Geography.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach human and urban geography courses and contribute to the delivery of core courses in spatial and quantitative methods.  Development of upper-level courses in their own field of specialization (such as urban policy, social problems related to housing, transportation etc.) is expected.  Involvement in the delivery of program requirements such as capstone, practicum, and internships is required.

We seek applicants who share our passion for, and commitment to, innovative and inspirational teaching in a student-centered environment.  The successful candidate will be a collegial, energetic and innovative individual who has experience and interest in developing experiential learning opportunities including field trips, and community-based engagement.  An ability to teach across traditional disciplinary boundaries (including Indigenous Studies, Food Systems, Environmental Studies, Global Development or Migration and Citizenship) would be an asset.  The successful applicant must be able to incorporate or reflect Indigenous perspectives or ways of teaching and learning into their curriculum. 

Applicants should be committed to scholarship and research that supports applied and experiential learning at a regional undergraduate university.  Applicants will have a demonstrable record of scholarship in their field and be able to integrate their research into student learning opportunities. 

We are seeking individuals who can actively contribute to department growth and program development.  This will involve participation in departmental and institutional committees, academic leadership, supporting student events and promoting department and institutional initiatives.  An ongoing commitment to professional development of teaching and learning as well as disciplinary focus is expected. 

We particularly encourage applications from Indigenous scholars or teachers or researchers with experience of racialization or colonization.


The successful candidate will have a PhD in Geography, Urban Studies or related discipline by the position start date.  You will be an innovative and inspirational teacher (for example, team teaching, online, inside and outside the classroom, problem-based learning, assessment) with a minimum of two years post-secondary teaching experience.  In addition to a background in urban geography you will have teaching or research experience in spatial and quantitative methods that will allow you to contribute to these courses at an introductory level.  Your scholarship and research activities will be student-centred as demonstrated by a plan for integrating this in a regional undergraduate institution.  Your ability to engage in department and institutional initiatives will be clearly demonstrated.  You will have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
