Our vision
UFV School of Communication builds communication excellence for both program and non-program students, developing practical skills and contextual knowledge for a modern workplace and society. Communication skills are universally applicable across disciplines and professions in business; politics; social and cultural life; creative industries; and interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships. Our faculty researches and teaches professional communication across different models and modalities, with a focus on cultural and public engagement, responsibility, and efficiency of true professionals.
Our mission
Our mission is to provide a welcoming educational experience in which students can learn to become competent and ethical communicators guided by the department's core values:
Effective communication
Our paramount mission is to assist students in communicating effectively, producing and disseminating communication messages that are audience-centric and creatively pushing the envelope, while aligning with the fundamental principles of applied communication.
Information literacy and digital competencies
We help students engage in critical thinking and use the information to succeed in their academic, professional, and personal lives by defining information needs, locating, evaluating, and using all available information resources effectively and responsibly.
Mediated communication
Technology mediates personal and professional interactions. We teach three related, yet distinct formats of communication: written, oral and visual. The goal of our program is to enhance students’ ability to communicate effectively through all communication platforms.
Community engagement
Community-engaged communications teaching is essential to our department’s identity. We aim to collaborate with members of the community and are committed to making the benefits of our research and practice broadly accessible and applicable beyond the classroom experience.
Responsibility
Our expertise encompasses a broad range of communication processes and their effects on different cultures within Canada and internationally. Awareness of differences is necessary for making informed, meaningful, and ethical decisions about messages both received and transmitted. Through our commitment to inclusivity and academic rigor, we encourage the free expression of ideas and intellectual discourse.
Transforming society and promoting justice
We aim to prepare students to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing dialogue on social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. We want our graduates to make a positive difference in the world through ethical communication practices and advocacy that promote inclusion, mutual respect, and opportunities.
Fostering excellence
By carefully examining student learning, curricular development, technology integration, faculty research, and community service, the department strives to continually improve program quality and student experience.
