Floral Design Basics 1

Cost: $849

Develop a fundamental knowledge of flower arranging and learn the Elements and Principles of floral design. Familiarize yourself with common and botanical plant and flower names. Learn about floral tools and supplies, the care and handling of flowers, and the preparation and planning of floral design. Make your own floral arrangements to take home. Learn about Christmas-related product information, cone identification, decorating a Christmas tree, and seasonal designs (table centrepiece with candles, Christmas wreaths, door hangings, and one-sided arrangements). Topics include historical background of special holidays, product information, hospital guidelines for flowers, and special holiday designs. Topics include the importance of sympathy etiquette and traditions, customer care, and creating floral designs such as a casket sprays, church bouquets, wreath designs, and easel sprays. Topics include magazine worthy wedding flowers, wedding productions, the meaning of flowers, multicultural weddings, and how to develop a wedding business. Goat Handling

Domestic goats not only make wonderful pets, but they can also be a source of income for hobby farmers and homesteaders. Learn all about breeds, behaviour, feed and nutrition, hoof trimming and dehorning, first aid, deworming, breeding, kit care, and milking. This information-packed workshop can help you avoid costly mistakes and confidently raise healthy goats for pleasure or profit.

Introduction to Mushrooms

Cost: $245

Identify wild mushrooms of the south coast of B.C. with experienced mycologist Dr. Sharming Gamiet. Work through the dichotomous keys that are used in mushroom identification and review references used to identify mushrooms. Develop a solid understanding of the differences between choice, delectable, and poisonous mushrooms. A list of references used to identify mushrooms is provided. Purchase David Aurora’s Mushrooms Demystified from the UFV Bookstore in Chilliwack. This introductory course is an excellent foundation for those pursuing careers in ecotourism, culinary arts, wild crafting, and ecology. A field trip is included to get firsthand experience. Date and time will be determined in class, based on weather conditions.

Due to present circumstances, this course is cancelled for Fall 2020. It may be offered in Fall 2021.

Landscape Design 1

Acquire the skills to develop a residential landscape design that extends your lifestyle outdoors. Learn how to use the landscape design process, graphic plans, and the outdoor room concept to create a personalized and inviting outdoor living space of any size. This is the first in a series of courses related to landscape design. This course is perfect for homeowners, tenants, and property managers, as well members of the landscape industry. The class is taught by career horticulturalist and educator Michelle Nakano.

Pruning Workshop

Cost: $115

This six-hour hands-on workshop covers basic pruning techniques applicable to a wide variety of plant material. Participants work on different trees, ornamental shrubs, and a fruit tree to learn to make proper cuts. Dress for the weather and bring your own pruners, such as secateurs or loppers.

Soap Making - Cold Process

Cost: $119

Learn the basics of old fashioned soap making and make your own basic cold process castile soap. Participants will learn the basic steps, from safety, weighing, bringing to trace, adding scents and exfoliants and using molds. All materials and supplies are provided. You are welcome to bring your own scented oils. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes, including long sleeves. Please bring hand towel to insulate your soap for 24 hours after class. Take home 2 pounds of soap, recipe, techniques and confidence to make your next batch at home. Soap is ready to use in 3 weeks.
