English

Richel Davies

My degree in English from UFV has given me the ability to put my ideas into action and turn concepts into business plans. The writing and research skills I developed through my studies have enabled me to advance in my career and become a leader in my field.

English isn’t just about Shakespeare — although literature is amazing, so please consider reading Shakespeare, too!

English is about the essential skills that help you excel in the job markets of today and remain competitive for tomorrow. No matter how business is conducted, either face-to-face or online, and no matter where in the world you are, ideas have to be documented, unknowns must be researched, and strategies need to be communicated.

Having worked as a human resources professional since graduating, I saw first-hand the value of an English degree in a business setting. Being able to write well definitely gives you a solid foundation that you’ll be able to use to succeed anywhere.

The close-reading skills I acquired through my English studies translated easily to reading legislation and case law. In addition, the strong writing skills I developed with the assistance of my professors in the UFV English department gave me an advantage in law school and that has certainly carried through to my career as a lawyer.
