English Language Studies (ELS) certificate program
The English Language Studies (ELS) certificate program is structured around four levels of English language ability with certificates and courses from intermediate to pre-university levels:
- Intermediate certificate (level 50)
- Advanced I certificate (level 60)
- Advanced II certificate (level 70)
- Academic certificate (level 80)
English upgrading for International students
If you are a full-time international student, UFV offers intensive English upgrading, ranging from intermediate to pre-university levels, with access to university courses at the highest levels. To find out more, visit the International website.

In addition, several courses at the Advanced II and Academic levels of the program satisfy UFV’s English language proficiency requirement.
Admission requirements and study options
Students who apply to the ELS certificate program may need to take a placement test to be admitted to specific proficiency levels and courses.
Classes are held at UFV’s Abbotsford campus during the fall, winter, and summer semesters. Most classes are held on weekday mornings and afternoons, and some evening classes are offered at different times throughout the year.
When to apply
Applications are accepted on a continuous basis throughout the year. Please note, however, that application and registration procedures are different for domestic and international students.
