Student Tech Guide

Student Computer Accounts

  • Access to any computer on all campuses is restricted to currently registered UFV students.
  • The account is free, is based on your student ID number, and is confirmed through your registration data.
  • ‌Your student ID number will be printed on personal information you receive from UFV such as a registration receipt or on the front of your Campus Card.

Can’t find your student ID number?

  • Students must visit the Office of the Registrar in person and provide ID such as their Campus Card or other government issued ID and your student ID number will be provided.
  • Student ID numbers will not be given out over the phone.

Where to use your computing accounts

UFV Computers, Network Files and Email

  • Your student computing account allows computer access to the UFV network files, student email and online courses while on campus and remotely.
  • Students set their own personal passwords and are responsible for not sharing their accounts.

myUFV Web Services and Online Courses

  • myUFV is a portal where students can access many UFV student web services.
  • Students can register for courses, view class grades and schedules, read their email, interact with their instructor, read current news, sports, and concert listings, access UFV Online and Library resources, join discussion groups, access network files and receive campus and personal announcements.
  • Students can log into their UFV online courses directly or through myUFV.

  • Search the Library catalogue, article indexes and research and government databases

Create an Account

Temporary Grace Account

  • During the first two weeks at the start of every semester a TEMPORARY generic student account allows access to UFV computer resources.
  • After this two week grace period, the generic account is DISABLED and you MUST create and use your own personal computer account.

1. Go to a computer

  • Are you on-campus in a UFV computer lab or at a UFV Library computer?
    1. Turn on a UFV computer and wait for the login prompt
  • Are you away from campus at a computer with internet access?
    1. Type my.ufv.ca into a web browser
    2. Go to the Secure Access Login area of myUFV

2. Type your username

  • Your computer username is your student number
  • It is nine numbers
    Example: 300099999
  • It is printed on your campus card and your course registration receipt

3. Type your password

  • The FIRST time you log in to the UFV network your default password is set to your date of birth
  • It is six numbers in the format of yymmdd
    Example: February 17, 1984 is 840217
    • yy (last two digits of year) 84
    • mm (two digits of month) 02
    • dd (two digits of day) 17

4. Set your security question (myUFV option only)

  • Once you successfully log into myUFV, set a security question to assist you in the future in case you forget your password
  • Choose the Home tab, click on Personal Information, then click on Change Security Question
  • Select a security question from the pull-down or type your own question
  • Type your security answer which is case sensitive and limited to 30 characters

5. Change your birth date password

  • To access certain higher secure areas of myUFV, you will be asked to change your default password to a personal password only you would know
  • Choose a new and different personal password that is exactly six numbers
  • Please wait 15 minutes before using your password for the first time
  • In the future, you can change your password by choosing the Home tab, clicking on Personal Information, and then clicking on Change Your PIN

Please wait 15 minutes or longer after any myUFV change before you log in again to allow time for the network to synchronize all of your computer accounts.

Account Help - What to do if...

You do not know your student number

  • The Office of the Registrar can provide your student number if you visit them in person and show proper photo identification (ID) such as your campus card.

Your account is suspended

  • More than five unsuccessful attempts to log in to your myUFV account will temporarily suspend it.
  • Wait half an hour or longer and try to log in again using your correct information.

You forgot your Password and Need it Reset

  • Try first to reset your password yourself using your security question:
    1. Go to my.ufv.ca
    2. Under the Help & Information section click on Reset your password
    3. Enter your student number in the User ID box and leave the PIN box empty
    4. Click on Forgot PIN?
  • If you haven't previously entered a security question-answer in myUFV, this function will not work, and UFV will have to reset your password.
  • When you use your security question to log in to your myUFV account you will have only five attempts to correctly answer and exactly match your security question on file or your myUFV account will be disabled.

Your Account is Disabled

  • If there has been more than five incorrect attempts to answer your security question, your account will be disabled.
  • You will still be able to log into myUFV, but access to certain personal confidential areas (i.e. your grades, your registration details, etc.) will be restricted.
  • If your account is disabled, your password can be reset by the Office of the Registrar or the IT Service Desk.

Your Password is Expired

  • Inactive student accounts will expire if you have not logged into your myUFV account for a long period of time.
  • Please have your password reset if you no longer have myUFV access.

UFV Needs to Reset your Password

Have your password reset back to your birth date by either:

  1. Visiting: Bring photo ID such as your campus card to any Office of the Registrar or to the IT Service Desk and request a password reset.
  2. Faxing: Fill out and sign a Reset myUFV Access or Forgot myPIN form available online at ufv.ca/admissions/forms. Fax the form to Office of the Registrar along with a photocopy of your photo ID. Your signature on your photo ID must match your signature on the form.
  3. Scanning/Emailing: Complete the Reset myUFV Access or Forgot myPIN form and scan/email it along with photo to reginfo@ufv.ca. Your signature on your photo ID must match your signature on the form.
  4. Phoning: Call the Office of the Registrar at 604-854-4501 to request a password reset. To verify your information over the phone, you will need to answer a minimum of three security questions.

Please wait 15 minutes or longer after any myUFV change before you log in again to allow time for the network to synchronize all of your computer accounts‌.

R: drive (HomeDIR)

  • Student's own personal 1 GB storage space

Q: drive (Instructor_Files)

  • Used by instructors to distribute course files to students.
  • Faculty can add, modify or delete files on Q: drive.
  • Students can only read and save the data that is stored on the Q: drive.

P: drive (Public)

  • Student public storage space where all students can add, modify and delete files.

What is myFILES?

  • myFILES enables you to securely access and manage the UFV network folders and drives which you have been given remote access.

Previous File Storage

Do you have personal files saved on your personal student UFV network drive before September 2012?

  • In September 2012, UFV’s network file storage system for students was changed.
  • UFV students from Summer 2012 and earlier semesters copied or moved any personal files they want saved from NetStorage at gw.ufv.ca/NetStorage at Home@UCFV (also known as R:Drive).
  • After May 31, 2013, students will no longer have access to their personal files on the old file NetStorage file system.
  • The logical place students moved their files is to their new HomeDir at gateway.ufv.ca.

How can I access and use my UFV student email?

Access your email from two locations:

  • my.ufv.ca allows you to read your email and access other computer resources
  • myMail allows access to student email only

Email Format

  • Firstname.Lastname@student.ufv.ca
    • Example: Mary.Smith@student.ufv.ca
  • Note:Common names may have sequence numbers added to email address
    • Example: Mary.Smith1@student.ufv.ca

Email Storage Space

  • Web-based e-mail message storage space is limited to 300 mb. Student mailboxes will not be increased in size. Please ensure you are diligent in keeping your mailbox under the size limit by regularly deleting email, and saving attachments to your student home directory on the network (R: drive). Reminder that all folders including the inbox, sent and deleted items etc. count towards your storage space quota.

Email client or mobile device setup for student email

  • Due to SMTP configuration on the server, POP and IMAP configuration for set-up in 3rd party clients, or on mobile devices, are not configurable for STUDENT Zimbra email.

    Students are suggested to use the Zimbra web interface at: https://mymail.ufv.ca/

Forwarding Your Student Email

You can forward messages to another email account if you choose, although the IT Services department does not recommend it. We recommend that:

  • Students not forward email from the student.ufv.ca email system to a non-UFV email system.
  • Students always use their UFV email address when contacting instructors.

Why?

  • We can't guarantee that you will receive messages forwarded to another email system. A forwarded message could bounce if your inbox is full or otherwise unavailable, or it could be blocked altogether by a spam filter.
  • Your external email provider domain may be blacklisted on the UFV spam filter system. UFV will not remove blacklisted domains. This means you may not be able to send from that email address to a UFV address.
  • Email sent from a non-UFV email address to a UFV address may be blocked by our spam filters without notification to you or the recipient. Your instructor or other important recipient may not receive your email at all.
  • The UFV-assigned email address clearly identifies you as a student. For example, email from soccerstardude@hotmail.com or cutekitten524@yahoo.ca may be flagged as spam in an instructor's inbox, and be deleted unread.
  • If you are submitting an assignment close to deadline, the UFV email system will get it to your instructor on time. Other email systems may delay sending email, which could cause assignments to be delivered late to your instructor’s inbox. This could result in deducted marks or worse, depending on your instructor's late assignment policy.
  • If there is a problem with the UFV student email system that can be readily identified to instructors by IT Services. Non receipt or delay of a forwarded email address cannot be verified by IT Services for instructors.
  • If there is a problem with your email forwarding reported to the IT Service Desk, the fix will be to remove the forwarding. Additional investigation will not be undertaken.

About UFV Computer Labs

  • The University of the Fraser Valley provides over four hundred computer systems to assist students in their educational process.
  • These systems are organized into networked labs ranging in size from 15 to 100 computer systems.
  • The fee for using these labs is included in the student’s tuition.
  • Computer labs are upgraded on a continual, rotational basis as required. ‌
  • Over seventy different applications (software programs) are installed in the computer labs.
  • This includes a full suite of Internet tools, Microsoft Office, programming tools, statistical packages and many specialized programs developed for a variety of different disciplines of study.
  • With few exceptions, all systems are PCs running the MS-Windows operating system.

Types of Software Available in UFV Computer labs

  • Faculty requiring special instructional software or changes to the set of standard software must inform the IT Services, Manager of Instructional Technology and Client Support, by the following deadlines:

    • Summer Semester changes must be submitted before Feb 1
    • Fall Semester changes must be submitted before Jun 1
    • Winter Semester changes must be submitted before Oct 1

Printing in a UFV computer lab

Step 1: Obtain a Campus Card

  • ‌Students must first obtain a Campus Card from the card office.
  • Dates, times, and campus locations are listed on the Campus Card website at the start of each semester.

Step 2: Load money onto the Campus Card

  • Students are required to pay $0.10 per page when using the lab printers.
  • Students must have appropriate funds on their card prior to printing in a computer lab.
  • Pre-load the printing and photocopying fund on the Campus Card in the card office, or at the Bookstore.
  • NOTE: Campus Cards used for printing in the computer labs ARE compatible with the photocopiers.

Step 3: Send print job to printer

  1. Send your print job from your computer as you would normally.
  2. Walk over to the nearest, working print station. (The printers are on a network so you may access your print job from another lab if the printer you are using is not functional or is out of paper.)
  3. Insert your Campus Card.
  4. Enter your username on the monitor beside the printer and click the OK button.
  5. You will see a list of your print job(s) on the screen. Use the mouse to select (click on) your print job.
  6. Click on PRINT and your print job will be sent to printer AND money will be deducted from your print card.

Removable Storage Devices (USB and Flash Drives)

  • To store your information externally, IT Services recommends students buy a USB flash drive with the slimmest connector (available at UFV Bookstores).

How to use your USB Flash Drive

  1. Insert your USB flash drive and Microsoft Windows will recognize and initialize the new device.
  2. Save your data on the USB flash drive.
  3. Click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the bottom-right system tray of Microsoft Windows.
  4. When message says Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device, remove your USB flash drive.

TIPS:

  • Please label your flash drive with your name or number to increase the chances it can be returned to you if ever you accidentally lose it.
  • Please save your work often.

  • Use internet-connected kiosks to register for courses, look up UFV-related information, or contact the IT Service Desk.
  • Kiosks can be found near Offices of the Registrar and other areas around campus.

Online Courses

Login Information

  • Log into a Blackboard Learn course at myclass.ufv.ca.
  • STUDENTS use their student number and their 6-digit myUFV password to log into an online course.
  • FACULTY use their their employee number and 6-digit myUFV password to log into an online course.
  • If you are on a UFV campus, make sure you use the Eduroam option to connect through wireless to a Blackboard Learn online course.
  • You can also log into myUFV and choose the My Courses channel to:
    • View their course schedules, homepages, and course material,
    • Email instructors, communicate with classmates, and
    • Access UFV online courses.

Online Help

  • Online courses will not open until noon on the first day of classes.
  • If students do not see their online course one they log in to myUFV, they should confirm their registration status with Office of the Registrar.
  • If you are having difficulties using BBLearn, please check your web browser compatibility and choose a browser that is CERTIFIED for best results.

Unexpected Outages

Scheduled Maintenance

  • IT Services schedules system changes and "downtime" which may interrupt some or all computer services while IT Services makes software or hardware upgrades or fixes.
  • This normally occurs on Sunday mornings between 7.00 am and 11.00 am.
  • Notice of service interruption will be broadcast on myUFV and on the IT Services website’s Scheduled Events Calendar.

  • Students log into itservicedesk.ufv.ca using your student number and your 6-digit myUFV pin.
  • Employees log in using your network (active directory) username and password.
  • Please provide your full name, student or employee number, phone number and details of your enquiry.

Knowledge Base

  • Search the IT Service Desk Knowledge Base for self help with common UFV computer-related problems and questions.
  • No login is required.
