Good auto repair mechanics are hard to find

Gone are the days when any backyard mechanic could fix a car.

Advances in automotive technology require that auto mechanics know how to use a variety of advanced diagnostic equipment in order to service today's motor vehicles. Knowledge of on-board computers and electronic systems is essential to maintain and repair most cars and trucks on the road today.

That's why training is key to launching a successful career as an auto mechanic. UFV's ten-month Automotive Service Technician program can provide you with the knowledge and practical skills needed to enter the automotive industry.

You learn to use specialized equipment to service steering and suspension systems, brakes, engines, and electrical systems. You have many opportunities to apply what you learn in a shop equipped with the latest technology, under the supervision of seasoned instructors with in-depth industry experience.

When you complete the program successfully, you can secure advanced placement in UFV's Auto Service Technician apprenticeship training. And you have a competitive edge to find work with motor vehicle dealers, garages, truck and trailer dealerships, fleet maintenance companies, service stations, auto specialty shops, racing teams, transportation companies, salvage yards, or automotive parts stores.

Career outlook for automotive technicians

The Automotive Industries Association of Canada reports that employers have difficulty filling auto tech positions because many candidates lack experience and training. The BC Labour Market Outlook for 2018-2028 expects 6380 new job openings for automotive service technicians, truck and bus mechanics, and mechanical repairers.

Job seekers who have completed a post-secondary automotive training program will find that it is easier to find employment, as they are fully qualified to service the computerized systems used in vehicles today. Those without formal automotive training are likely to face stiff competition for entry-level jobs.

Car mechanics with specialized, up-to-date technological knowledge — including knowledge of hybrid and electrical vehicles — will be in greatest demand. Experienced automotive service techs may advance to shop foreman or service manager positions, while others may open their own repair shop.
