Hazardous Materials Spill or Leak

Natural gas leak:

Prevent an explosion

  • Do not pull fire alarm; this can cause an explosion
  • Do not use cellphones or radios from inside the building; this can cause an explosion
  • Do not turn off equipment, computers or lights; this can cause an explosion
  • Extinguish all open flames if safe to do so
  • If possible, turn of the gas shut-off valve

Evacuate

  • Stay calm and evacuate in a quick and orderly manner
  • Leave doors and windows open on your way out, but only do so if it is safe
  • Upon exiting the building, proceed directly to the closest evacuation assembly area and wait for further instructions.

Call for help

  • Inform supervisor or department head.
  • Do not re-enter the building until the Fire Department gives permission to do so.

 

Chemical, biohazard, or radiation spill:

Any uncontrolled release of hazardous materials is considered a reportable spill and these procedures must be followed.

Safeguard the spill area

  • Evacuate immediate area. Do not cross through the contaminated area.
  • If able, shut down equipment.
  • Isolate area and notify others in the area to prevent re-entry.

Evacuate the building

  • Stay calm and evacuate in a quick and orderly manner.
  • Close doors on your way out, if it is safe to do so.
  • Upon exiting the building, proceed directly to an area that is at a safe distance outside the main entrance of the building and wait for personnel.

Call for help

  • Once safely outside, call Security at 1-855-239-7654 and provide information about the spill:
  • Inform your supervisor or department head
  • Do not re-enter the building until the Fire Department gives permission to do so.
