Hold and secure is an emergency procedure intended to secure and protect occupants from a violent threat in close proximity to a campus, but not directly targeting the campus. This procedure is used when it may be more dangerous to evacuate a building than stay inside. It is essential for the safety of occupants and emergency responders that individuals always comply with instructions provided by emergency personnel.

Upon alert to hold and secure:

  • Close, lock and monitor exterior doors.
  • Close curtains or blinds where possible and lock windows.
  • If you are outside, move to the nearest building.
  • Remain calm and await further instructions.
  • Classes and activities may continue to function normally, however no movement between buildings is permitted.

Following the hold and secure:

  • Cooperate with emergency personnel to assist in the orderly evacuation of the building if required.
  • The police may require individuals to remain available for questioning following the hold and secure.
  • Safety & Security staff and/or Security Officers may be present as you exit the building to provide additional information.
