Remote work safety

If you are working or studying from home, it's important to set up your work or study space with your health and safety in mind. Consider fire safety, electrical safety, and general safety. Use the checklist below to help you get set up, or download a printable version.

Safe set-up for your work or study space at home

Fire Safety

  • Keep doorways, hallways and floors unobstructed
  • Make sure your work areas has two exits (e.g. a door and a window)
  • Keep a charged fire extinguisher close at hand
  • Install working smoke detectors in your work area
  • Move clutter or flammable liquids out of your work area
  • Move flammable items away from heaters
     
     

Electrical safety

  • Use a surge protector for your computer equipment
  • Don't overload circuits (breakers should not trip)
  • Use electrical cords and outlets in good condition with no exposed or damaged wiring
  • Don't daisy-chain extension cords and power strips
  • Use grounded outlets with three-pronged plugs if necessary
  • Turn off/put your equpiment to sleep when not in use

Health & safety

  • Choose a space that's reasonably quiet and free from distractions
  • Be sure that temperature, ventilation, and lighting are comfortable for you
  • Keep first aid supplies on hand
  • Secure cables and cords to keep from tripping, and make sure they are away from heat sources
