Becoming an early childhood educator in BC

What can I do with an Early Childhood Educator (ECE) certificate in BC?

Short answer: a lot. There are many pathways and resources available with a certificate in ECE. The first step is to register. First, complete at least one of the following courses:

  • child development
  • child guidance
  • child health, safety and nutrition.

At that point, you can get a job as an ECE assistant in a childcare centre. These centres may be provincially run or privately run. They consist of many types (daycares, preschools, special needs centres, and more).

Are there options after graduating with a certificate in ECE?

Once you graduate with your ECE certificate (and register with the BC ECE Registry), you can continue to work in childcare centres, open your own daycare, or pursue higher education in child and youth care.

You can ladder over to the diploma program. Graduates with both a certificate and a diploma may seek employment as a supervisor in a childcare centre, or as a supported child development worker.

A bachelor's degree or other post-graduate studies can help you become a policy or training analyst, child care consultant, or a provincial licensing officer.

Whatever your journey, UFV’s School of Education is here to help. Our ECE program has developed close relationships with local childcare centres, and most graduates have full-time work before graduation day.
