PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

UFV's Modern Languages Institute offers an Intermediate Proficiency associate certificate (12 credits) in Halq'eméylem, the traditional language of the Stó:lō people.

Halq’eméylem is a dialect of Salishan language category, spoken in the areas of central and upper Fraser Valley, Harrison Lake, and the lower Fraser Canyon. It is also known as Upriver Halq'eméylem and it is closely related to Downriver Halkomelem and Island Halkomelem.

Halq'eméylem is an endangered language. However, since the 1970s, linguists have worked with fluent speakers to preserve the language and prevent its extinction. Many Stó:lō communities are working hard to revitalize their language. Halq'eméylem classes for Stó:lō children are available starting in Head Start preschool programs all the way to Grade 12 classes in some public schools. Indigenous organizations also offer language camps and courses.

Halq'eméylem language courses are certified by the Halq'eméylem Language Authority and are recognized by the B.C. College of Teachers.

CAREER EXPECTATIONS

An Intermediate Proficiency associate certificate in Halq'eméylem can count toward another credential at UFV: Halq’eméylem courses are currently a requirement for UFV's Stó:lō Studies certificate, Aboriginal Culture and Language Support diploma, and Bachelor of Arts with a major or minor in Indigenous Studies.

Becoming proficient in Halq'eméylem could lead to a career as a language specialist in the school system or with an Indigenous organization. It can also be an asset when applying to work in a general capacity with Indigenous organizations, First Nations communities, Aboriginal community liaison offices, and research centres or heritage sites.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

  1. B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent or minimum of 19 years of age before the first day of classes.
  2. Applicants must meet the entry-level English language proficiency requirement. For details on how this requirement may be met, see the English language proficiency requirement section of the calendar.
  3. For students under 19 years of age, admission is conditional upon B.C. secondary school graduation. Proof of graduation is due at the end of the first week in August for the Fall semester. B.C. Grade 12 students can arrange at their schools to have transcripts sent directly to UFV.
