PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

UFV’s 21-credit Diaspora Studies certificate focuses on the study of the migration and resettlement of people across national borders in response to historical, political, and social forces.

At the intersection of English, Anthropology, History, India-Canada Studies, Political Science, and Sociology, the UFV Diaspora Studies Certificate prepares you to be a thoughtful, informed and engaged citizen in an increasingly complex world.

You start your Diaspora Studies with a core “Culture and Theory of Diaspora” course that investigates the phenomenon of diaspora in modern, postcolonial, and global contexts. Then choose to complete your certificate through either a coursework or an internship/service learning option.

Option A — Coursework

Choose an additional three courses from either the primary or secondary electives list

Option B — Internship/Service Learning

Get a rich learning experience to complement your academic studies by completing an internship. You work under the supervision of both a UFV faculty member and an internship supervisor while completing a hands-on or project-based assignment. Then choose two additional courses from either the primary or secondary electives list to complete your studies.

CAREER EXPECTATIONS

Your certificate specifically prepares you for diaspora-related graduate work or careers in:

  • Public service
  • Community development
  • Social policy
  • Immigration and settlement
  • Diaspora-related arts

In a world where nearly 20 people are forcibly displaced every minute, studying migration issues can help you become more compassionate and informed, both in your personal and work life.

Because Canada is a country that opens its borders to immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, insights from the certificate can prove essential if you are considering a career as a school teacher, counsellor, immigration officer, career counsellor, youth advocate, not-for-profit worker, humanitarian worker, fundraiser, church worker, and more.

Featuring a Diaspora Studies certificate on your résumé can also open the door to a career within the increasing number of organizations concerned with migration issues, such as non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government bodies, community services, humanitarian relief organizations, and intergovernmental organizations like UNHCR, NATO, World Health Organization, and others.
