Animal Care Committee - Call for Community Members

UFV’s Animal Care Committee (ACC) invites applications from the general public for the following member category, as per the UFV ACC Terms of Reference and the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) Terms of Reference for Animal Care Committees.

  • Two vacancies for a THREE (3) year renewable term beginning February 2025 for a representative from the community, who has never worked with animals for scientific purposes, has no conflict of interest that would compromise their role, and has no current affiliation with UFV. Applicants should be a member of the Fraser Valley community, and a history of community involvement is valued.

The role of the community member is to represent general community interests, opinions, and concerns regarding animal-based research, teaching, or testing, and to provide balance and credibility to a process that would otherwise be strictly institutional.

UFV is committed to the humane and ethical care and use of animals. The ACC is a delegation of the Provost and VP Academic, and, through the Board of Governors, has the authority to approve, reject, propose modifications to or terminate all proposed or ongoing research or teaching involving animals within the institution’s jurisdiction based on the ethical considerations as set forth in the UFV Animal Care Policy #51 and the ACC Terms of Reference.

Overall ACC Responsibilities and Criteria for consideration:

  • Applicants must be actively interested in the care and use of animals, be willing and able to work constructively with the members of animal care and use programs, and be ready to undertake a certain amount of work and learning, including the mandatory CCAC training modules provided by UFV.
  • The ACC at UFV reviews applications for animal use, Animal Use Protocols (AUPs), primarily in teaching and field research. The applicant must be able to review AUPs and provide comments or revisions in a timely manner. The ACC receives approximately eight AUPs a year.
  • Applicants must be able to attend regular in person meetings 2-3 times a year alternating between the UFV Chilliwack and Abbotsford campus and attend an annual site visit on the Chilliwack campus. Meetings are scheduled as needed and attendance is expected for quorum. The ACC coordinator will attempt to ensure that the meeting time works for the community member, however the meetings are scheduled during regular business hours.
  • Applicants are encouraged to attend post approval monitoring visits (PAMs) and animal welfare assessments (AWAs) on site at animal facilities at UFV Chilliwack campus, but it is not mandatory.
  • Applicants must make every effort to attend the CCAC assessment visit at UFV every three years.
  • Applicants may be asked to participate in subcommittees for developing new guidelines and Standards of Practice, and action items resulting from the CCAC assessment visit.
  • Applicants must be 19 years of age or older.

If you would like more information, please contact the Chair of the ACC, Dr. Gillian Hatfield (gillian.hatfield@ufv.ca).

If you are interested, please submit a resume and a one-page statement of interest outlining your skills and experiences as they pertain to the criteria and responsibilities listed above to the Animal Care Committee Coordinator, Yvette Fairweather (acc@ufv.ca) by February 18, 2025.  The vacancies will remain open until filled.

The ACC Chair, AVP Research & Graduate Studies, and the Animal Care Coordinator will review all applications, make a recommendation to the ACC, and contact the successful applicant.
