email AwneetPrior to joining UFV in 2011, I worked as a faculty associate and coordinator at SFU, teaching in a variety of programs: PDP (pre-service teachers), PQP (foreign-credentialed teachers seeking BC certification), PLP (educational assistants upgrading to teachers), (ITEM) International Teacher Education Module-China, and MEd (international students studying TEFL/TESL). I previously taught secondary and middle school science and math in Maple Ridge and Merritt school districts.
Currently, I am an associate professor in the Teacher Education Department at UFV and Program Chair of the Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Mentorship degree. I am passionate about developing culturally responsive, antiracist, and socially just educators and leaders for today's dynamic contexts. I also teach courses in the areas of science education, leadership theory and practice, classroom research, and school reform, with a particular focus on modeling inquiry as both a stance and a practice. As the MEd program chair, I oversee graduate supervision and the development of students’ capstone presentations.
My PhD was a self-study exploring the role that dissonance and discord played in shaping my teaching practices and identity as a teacher educator. My research led to the development of pedagogical orientations of practice or “signature pedagogies” that serve to enhance teacher education: reflective pedagogies (reflection as reflexive and praxis-oriented); circular pedagogies (learning as continuous and connected); epistemic pedagogies (nature of knowledge in disciplines drives learning); and place-meaning pedagogies (constructing meaning from all dimensions of one's experience in places of learning). These pedagogies continue to inform my work in powerful and exciting ways.
My current scholarship and research center on social justice education, science teacher education, diversity in educational leadership, teachers' professional learning, and curriculum innovations in K-12 classrooms. I am involved in school partnerships and conduct research in the fields of Self-Study of Teacher Education Practices (S-STEP), frameworks for social justice, leadership in online learning, and practicum mentoring.
I am honoured to be the recipient of UFV’s Teaching Excellence Award in 2021 and a speaker at TEDxAbbotsford 2021.
