Master of Social Work degree
UFV’s Master of Social Work degree is a five-semester, two-year program comprised of 30 credits, including a 450-hour practicum.
The program’s core courses and electives are designed to develop a broad professional competency base at the graduate level. Core courses provide a comprehensive perspective on supervision and leadership, the integration of anti-oppressive and cross-cultural practice in social work, social policy, and advanced assessment techniques.
Based on your interests and career path, you will select one elective course (Health, Children and Families, or Mental Health), and complete a major paper/project in your area of interest.
The full program will typically take two years to complete, with a maximum of five years allowed. In addition to the regular MSW stream for those who already possess the BSW credential, the School of Social Work and Human Services will offer a non-BSW stream, designed for students with a Bachelor’s degree and experience in a related field. This option allows the student to take Social Work qualifying courses and then ladder directly into their MSW coursework.

Fees and additional costs
See the Fees and Other Costs section. There will be additional costs for textbooks, and there may be associated travel and living expenses.
Dates and location
The MSW program is designed to meet the diverse learning
needs of students. Using a mixed delivery model that combines online, flexible evening and weekend classes, the program allows greater accessibility to students with work and family commitments. The practicum is two days per week over two semesters.
Program requirements and continuance in program
To maintain status as a Master of Social Work program student and to continue in the program, students must maintain a minimum B (3.0 GPA) or better. Credit towards the degree will not be available for any course in which the grade is less than a B. Practica must be completed with satisfactory evaluations. The major project must be satisfactorily completed.
Failure to meet the minimum GPA will be considered by the Graduate committee as required under policy 340.03— Academic Warning.
Residency
UFV Graduate Studies policy requires that at least 75% of program courses be taken at UFV. The practicum and major paper/project must be completed through UFV, and it is anticipated that most students will take all their courses through UFV. However, a maximum of two courses (25%) may be taken at another university for credit in the UFV MSW program. This would require advance approval of the Director of the School of Social Work and Human Services and the Associate Vice-President of Graduate Studies and Research.
Graduation
Candidates who qualify to receive a UFV graduate degree must submit a Request for Graduation form to the UFV Admissions and Records office by April 1.
Note: Please be familiar with the
General Regulations for Graduate Studies.
Maximum length of time to complete program
Non-BSW graduates admitted to the program are expected to finish their qualifying courses within two years. All students must complete their entire MSW coursework within five years.
Transfer credit
In general, UFV acknowledges credits earned by a student at another institution recognized by UFV. Official transcripts are reviewed routinely for all degree applicants and students, and upon receipt from enrolled UFV students. Other applicants and students must request transfer credit; see the Transfer Credit section for details.
Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition
The Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process offers the opportunity to have learning and work experience assessed and appropriate credit granted. At UFV, there are several methods of documenting and demonstrating experiential learning. Credits obtained through prior learning cannot be used to meet UFV program residency requirements.
