Halq’eméylem

UFV's Modern Languages Institute offers an
Intermediate proficiency certificate in Halq’eméylem, the traditional language of the Stó:lõ people. It is a dialect of Salishan language category, spoken in the areas of central and upper Fraser Valley, Harrison Lake, and the lower Fraser Canyon. It is known also as Upriver Halq’eméylem and it is closely related to Downriver Halkomelem and Island Halkomelem. Halq’eméylem
is an endangered language.
Halq’eméylem is also a requirement for the Aboriginal Culture and Language Support diploma, offered by the School of Social Work and Human Services.
