Fashion Design diploma

Entrance requirements

1. B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent or 19 years or older before the first day of classes.

2. Program orientation: attendance is a required element of the portfolio review process.

3. Portfolio submission: guidelines for portfolio requirements will be sent to all applicants. These guidelines are also available on the Fashion Design website or from the department assistant.

4. Personal interview: applicants must attend a personal interview session, at which time the portfolio will be reviewed. An interview date and time will be assigned at the orientation session.

5. Applicants must satisfy the English language proficiency requirement. For details on how this requirement may be met, see English language proficiency requirement in the Admissions section of the calendar.

Note: For out-of-province applicants or applicants who reside over 400 km from the University, special arrangements for an orientation, long distance portfolio submission, and interview are available. For further details contact the department assistant.

Students who do not meet these requirements might consider the Arts Studies program path.

When to apply

Applications are accepted for entrance to the Fall semester only. For application deadlines, see Specific intake application process.

How to apply

1. Submit the application fee along with your UFV application for admission form to the Office of the Registrar (OReg). You can apply online or download an application form at ufv.ca/admissions/admissions/apply. Application forms are also available from any OReg or Student Services office.

Additional documents required for a complete application:
• Proof of B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent if not 19 years of age or older.
• Students who have attended a post-secondary institution must submit an official transcript (sealed envelope) for each institution attended, whether or not they have completed courses there. To be considered official, transcripts must be sent directly to UFV from the originating institution; see the Transfer credit section for details. To retain your original application date, order early so transcripts arrive within two weeks of the date your application is mailed or submitted.

2. When your application has been processed by the Office of the Registrar, you will receive information on the program orientation, portfolio submission dates, and a copy of portfolio guidelines. The portfolio is not due at the time of application, but will be submitted at the time of your personal interview. Applicants must attend an orientation session, as the personal interview appointments are set up at this time.

3. Upon admission to the program you will be provided with registration information. A deposit is required when you register (see the Fees and Other Costs section). This money will be applied toward your tuition fees. Final payment of all course fees is due the end of the second week of classes.

If this program is full, or you are waiting to find out about your admission to the program, you will be given an opportunity to register as an Arts Studies student. It is not necessary to submit a separate application form. If you meet the entrance requirements and a space becomes available later, you will be contacted.

4. For students under 19 years of age, Fall admission is conditional upon B.C. secondary school graduation. Proof of completion of entrance requirements is due the beginning of August.

Basis for admission decision

Applicants who meet the entrance requirements will be admitted in order of their application date. This date is set when an application, all required documentation, and the application fee have been submitted.

Tuition fees are approximately $4,500.00 per year. An allowance of $2,000.00 per year should be made to cover the cost of textbooks, supplies, field trips, practicum expenses, and other miscellaneous items. Some courses will have an additional supply fee to cover the cost of materials provided to students. These fees are approximate and may vary with each individual student depending on the courses they choose. Supply fees range from $255.00 to $280.00 per year.

Supply fees cover the cost of pre-packaged kits necessary for student samples. Fees range in price depending on the course. Not all fashion courses have supply fees.

Location

Courses are offered on the Abbotsford campus.

Workload

Twenty hours per week of classroom time is scheduled in the first year of the program and 15 hours in the second, with additional time up to 24 hours depending on the electives or options selected.

In addition to scheduled classroom time, students are expected to take advantage of the fashion lab time (a minimum of 15 hours per week) to keep up with the workload.

Expectations

Deadlines are strictly adhered to as success in the industry relies heavily on the meeting of deadlines and delivery dates.

Regular attendance is mandatory. Penalties for late arrivals and absenteeism without reason might include a reduction of the final grade.

Students should not fall behind. Thirteen weeks per semester does not allow time to catch up. Also the design, drafting, and construction courses are so closely linked that a class missed in one area could set you back in the other two.

Students will benefit greatly from participating in extracurricular activities such as fashion shows and open houses, and are encouraged to do so. Time schedules and duties will be announced well in advance.

Transfer students and advanced standing

Applicants applying for transfer credits from another institution or advanced standing will be considered on an individual basis. Make an appointment to see the program head.

Re-application

Any student who has previously applied to the UFV Fashion Design program but who did not register and wishes to re-apply for admission will follow the same procedures as a new applicant.

Graduation requirements

The Fashion Design diploma will be awarded to students who have successfully completed all required courses with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 (C), plus electives/ options to give a minimum total of 63 to 67 credits.

A minimum C- grade or the instructor’s permission is required in all courses that are listed as a prerequisite for advancement into the next level.
