PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Coding skills are in high demand. More and more, our daily activities rely on software apps and computing technology. Businesses need strong coders who can help develop solutions to grand-challenge, complex, and modern-day problems. Coders are also an asset in specialized computing fields: AI, Big Data, mobile technologies, and web services.

The Coding Skills associate certificate is open to people with at least two years of computing education. It's designed to boost your existing skills, so you'll need to show a portfolio of your work to be admitted.

In the Coding Skills associate certificate, you'll complete five advanced software development courses. You'll tackle subjects such as algorithm design, software engineering, and coding best practices. One of your courses will be a three-credit field practicum experience. Some of our students have completed their practicum experiences within tech giants such as Amazon.

For a full list of courses, see the Coding Skills program outline.

CAREER EXPECTATIONS

You'll graduate from the Coding Associate associate program ready for junior roles in:

  • software development
  • front-end and back-end development
  • app creation
  • web development
  • API engineering

Wondering which roles are in the highest demand? The BC Labour Market Outlook identifies several computing professions as high opportunity occupations. These roles project excellent employment rates and strong wages:

  • Computer programmers and interactive media developers
  • Software engineers and designers
  • Web designers and developers

The computing marketplace is always changing. To make sure students graduate with in-demand skills, the School of Computing meets with an advisory committee. This diverse committee includes industry experts from both the private and public sectors. Their expertise helps shape courses and programs to keep them timely and innovative.
