email Michael WebsiteDr. Michael Batu is a Filipino-Canadian economist and Associate Professor of Economics at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. He is an accomplished researcher, having published his research in leading international journals in economics. His research and expert opinions about economic issues have been featured in Canadian, Philippine, and American media outlets. He is also a reviewer for several internationally published textbooks in economics. Dr. Batu also served as economist for the Government of Ontario, Canada and was an intern in the National Economic and Development Authority in the Philippines. Dr. Batu specializes in applied econometrics, applied macroeconomics, development economics, and the scholarship of teaching and learning economics.
Dr. Batu completed Bachelor of Arts in Economics with Computer Applications with Academic Distinction from San Beda College in Mendiola, Manila. He was among the first two graduates of Master in Applied Economics at De La Salle University Manila. After moving to Canada, he studied at the University of Guelph in Ontario, earning a Master of Arts in Economics and a Ph.D. in Economics for his theses entitled "Three Essays in Remittance Effectiveness".
Dr. Batu started teaching at the tertiary level soon after completing his undergraduate degree. His experience in teaching economics spans more than two decades across three continents. He won numerous awards and recognitions for excellence in teaching economics. At De La Salle University in Dasmariñas, he received the Faculty of the Year award for two consecutive years. In Canada, he earned the Teaching Excellence Award at the University of Guelph, and the Highest Teaching Score Award at the University of Windsor.
