In addition to textbooks and other print materials, instructors may require students to bring other necessary supplies to class or on a field trip. This is particularly true in physical geography and techniques courses. Many of these items—such as hiking boots and cameras—will be things that students already own. Others, which can largely be purchased at the UFV bookstore, are more specialized and course-specific. Course instructors will alert students as to what materials might be required for a field trip or lab assignment.
Commonly required supplies for courses with field trips:
- Sturdy footwear (e.g. hiking boots or hiking sandals)
- Foul weather gear (waterproof jacket, etc.)
- Waterproof field notebook (Rite-in-the-Rain notebooks are available in the UFV Bookstore);
Journals may be acceptable depending on conditions, but students are responsible for taking notes in wet and/or cold weather.
- Camera
- Day backpack
- Water bottle(s)
- Snacks (for longer trips)
The following materials are commonly required for physical and some human geography courses at all levels. Check with the instructor for more information.
- Pencils, pens, pencil crayons, eraser
- 30cm ruler
- Scientific calculator (does not need to be a graphing calculator—just something that can handle trigonometry and simple power functions)
- Metric graph paper--Quad 10 to 1
- Tracing paper
- Access to Google Earth
Longer field trips—e.g. Adventures in Geography courses and study tours—will require additional supplies typically needed when traveling.
