Cognitive scientists have identified two variables - practice style and
practice time - as key determinants of mastery in complex skills that
range from athletics t musical performance to computer programming.
According to K. Anders Ericsson, widely regarded as the foremost
theoretical and experimental researcher in this growing field, deliberate
practice goes far beyond hard work. "Deliberate practice is a very
special form of activity that differs from mere experience and mindless
drill...Unlike playful engagement with peers, deliberate practice is not
inherently enjoyable. It does not involve a mere execution or repetition
of already attained skills but repeated attempts to reach beyond one's current
level whih is associated with frequent failtures."
