PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Today’s office administration professionals need to be computer-savvy and proficient with the latest technology.

UFV’s six-month Applied Business Technology (ABT) program teaches you up-to-date office skills in:

  • Software applications including Adobe, Zoom, Office 365
  • Adaptive technologies
  • Social media management
  • Database management
  • Bookkeeping
  • Business communications
  • Office procedures

This program is perfect if:

  • You are just entering the workforce and need a solid set of office skills to land a job in office administration.
  • You already have a degree or diploma, but want to add some hands-on office administration skills to your portfolio.
  • You have been working in an office environment for some time, but would like to refresh your skills to become proficient with new office technology.

Practicum

At the end of the program, a three-week practicum with a local employer gives you an opportunity to apply your skills in an office environment before you graduate. UFV’s ABT program has a solid reputation for teaching office practices along with the latest software, so you’re job ready. In consultation with the practicum instructor, students may choose to complete ABT 188: Capstone in place of ABT 187: Work Experience (Practicum).

Other opportunities

Applied Business Technology training prepares you to pursue a specialization as a legal administrative assistant, medical or dental office assistant, records management professional, and more.

ABT graduates can also use the skills gained from the program to complete a diploma or a bachelor’s degree. At UFV, you can use the credits earned through your Applied Business Technology certificate towards earning a General Studies diploma or a Bachelor of Integrated Studies.

Delivery format for Fall 2024

The ABT program will be delivered in an online/hyflex mix using both synchronous and asynchronous formats. Students should expect to work on coursework the equivalent of Monday to Friday, 9 am–2:30 pm. Synchronous classes will be held daily from 10 am–noon and 1–2 pm, Monday–Friday. ABT is an intensive program, so you should expect to dedicate significant time outside scheduled class times to skill development, homework, and assignments. For hyflex courses, you can choose to attend in-person (classes are held at the Clearbrook Centre in Abbotsford) or virtually.

CAREER EXPECTATIONS

Once you have completed the Applied Business Technology (ABT) program, you will have the business, computer, and office skills necessary to be successful in any office environment. The rapid growth of industry in the Fraser Valley has resulted in a continuing demand for well-trained administrative professionals. ABT graduates are in high demand, and employers often ask specifically for ABT graduates.

UFV's Applied Business Technology program is an excellent addition to a diploma or bachelor's degree, providing practical office administration skills to advance your career.
