Biography

Muhi Bakini's academic journey reflects his dedication to public policy, global affairs, and social equity. He obtained his master’s in public policy and Global Affairs from the University of British Columbia in 2021, focusing on energy, resource development, and human security. Additionally, he holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) from the University of the Fraser Valley, awarded with distinction in 2018, and advanced certificates in Translation and Interpretation from the American University in Cairo, completed in 2007. His master’s research project examined the intersecting impacts of resource development and military interventions on women, peace, and security. This research included interviews with Iraqi women affected by the United States military invasion in 2003 and has significantly informed policy recommendations provided to the Dallaire Center for Excellence, which supports the Canadian Armed Forces. These recommendations have enhanced the Canadian Armed Forces' understanding and have informed their strategic considerations during military interventions. Muhi's professional background reflects an international perspective and adaptability across various roles. He has taught English as a Foreign Language primarily to refugees and asylum seekers in Egypt and Israel.

Moreover, Muhi has demonstrated his commitment to fostering understanding and collaboration within diverse communities. He has served as an interpreter for refugees during Refugee Status Determination interviews with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Australian Embassy in Cairo. In Canada, he continued his teaching career as an ESL instructor at the Universal Learning Institute in Coquitlam. Currently, as the Diversity Education Supervisor at Archway Community Services, Muhi conducts workshops on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, as well as Microaggression and Unconscious Bias. His insights have been shared as a guest speaker at the University of the Fraser Valley, where he addressed topics such as identity, social change, intersectionality, and cultural safety. Through his academic work and professional experience, Muhi is dedicated to promoting equitable and inclusive practices, reflecting a deep engagement with pressing social issues.

While many are still adapting to online learning, Adult Education at UFV has been leading the way! I’ve taken online courses from other institutions, and UFV’s dedication to technologies made for my best overall online learning experience. The most important thing about my experience at UFV is the feeling that I mattered to the school and my instructors. I wasn’t just a faceless student, even in an online environment.
