The study wove together elements of policy analysis, curriculum studies, teacher education, professional development, educational leadership, representation, and inclusion. Sameena’s work has been recognized through multiple awards including UBC’s Four Year Doctoral Fellowship, the Joseph Katz Memorial Scholarship, and the Patricia Dyer Memorial Award in Education.
Teaching and community engagement: Sameena’s profile brings together international teaching, educational leadership, research, educational consultancy, and digital content creation. She has taught several courses in the Department of Educational Studies (including Adult and Higher Education) and the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education at UBC. She has lived in parts of Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, Europe, and North America and has been an educator (primary to post-secondary) and educational leader (principal and primary teacher educator) for over two decades. She has also spearheaded multiple community-based educational initiatives in Canada. As an Equity Education Strategist and Curriculum Developer, she created research-informed anti-oppression professional development resources for K-12 teachers and school leaders at BC school districts. As an Educational Consultant and Researcher, she supported a BC school district in conceptualizing, constructing, and operationalizing a multi-year strategic action plan designed to enhance the district’s work in equity, diversity, and inclusion, aligning the work with the BC Ministry’s K-12 Anti-Racism Action Plan.
Research and knowledge mobilization: Sameena has been a member of research teams studying ethnocultural pluralism; the experiences of (international and domestic) working post-secondary students; the experiences of Indigenous Teacher Candidates; anti-racism in teacher education; K-12 school leadership; ableism; and media representations of asylum seekers and migrant workers. She was the Project Coordinator of a longitudinal study (2018-2022) that investigated the experiences of working undergraduate students at UBC and the University of Toronto. She was also responsible for the design, coordination, and management of a project focusing on enhancing Indigenous Teacher Candidates’ practicum experiences at UBC. Sameena has engaged in knowledge mobilization through presentations at multiple conferences and as an invited guest lecturer at the University of Malta. Her work has been published in the Journal of Research in International Education, the International Schools Journal, the Journal of Youth Studies, and the UBC Centre for Migration Studies Working Paper Series.
While many are still adapting to online learning, Adult Education at UFV has been leading the way! I’ve taken online courses from other institutions, and UFV’s dedication to technologies made for my best overall online learning experience. The most important thing about my experience at UFV is the feeling that I mattered to the school and my instructors. I wasn’t just a faceless student, even in an online environment.
