What is a foundation program?
A foundation program provides you with the basic knowledge and skills required to enter a particular trade. Formerly called Entry Level Trades Training, foundation programs take place in the classroom and in-school shop setting so you learn both the theoretical and practical components of your trade.
Unlike apprenticeship programs, foundation programs do not require an employer sponsor to enter the program. Foundation programs generally give you credit towards an apprenticeship and allow you to gain familiarity and experience in your trade, making it easier to get an employer to sponsor your apprenticeship.
As a graduate of a foundation program, you receive your first or second level credit (depending on the trade) towards an apprenticeship.
