The connection between teaching and research at the university is vital to the success of both. They are closely interconnected, mutually reinforcing each other. By connecting teaching and research, the university can provide its students with an education that is both academically rigorous and practically relevant. With the purpose to promote research excellence, the Faculty of Business and Computing has the following missions:
We foster meaningfully relevant research
Research that is not only academically rigorous and scientifically sound, but also has a direct and significant impact on society and addresses real-world problems and issues. This type of research is relevant and meaningful because it addresses important questions and challenges that have relevance to the lives of individuals, communities, and society as a whole. It is not only relevant to the academic community but also to the general public and stakeholders, and it aims to provide solutions that can be implemented to improve the quality of life. It is also important that the research is conducted in a responsible and ethical manner, considering the potential impact it may have on the communities or groups being studied, and involving them in the research process.
We promote imaginative, open-minded and respectful research
Imaginative, open-minded and respectful research can be characterized by originality, creativity, and a willingness to take risks for social justice purposes. This type of research often involves thinking outside of the box as well as exploring new, unconventional or Indigenous approaches to solving problems. In this perspective, we foster research can include developing new theories, methods, or technologies, or applying existing ones in new and unique ways by respecting traditional, Indigenous and alternative way of knowing. It pushes the boundaries of what is currently known and understood in a given field and often leads to breakthroughs and advancements. It encourages the researchers to be curious, flexible, and open-minded, and to question assumptions and status quo. It is not only about coming up with new ideas but also about taking them to the next level and seeing them through to implementation in a meaningful way for our communities.
We embed applied research in our curriculum
Undergraduate research allows students to apply the knowledge they have acquired in the classroom to real-world problems. By participating in research projects, students have the chance to work alongside experienced researchers and learn from them. This type of experiential learning is incredibly valuable, as it helps students understand the practical applications of what they have learned in the classroom and allows them to better understand the theoretical concepts they have been taught. Undergraduate research is an excellent way for students to develop valuable skills that are highly sought after by employers. By participating in research, students learn how to think critically, problem solve, and communicate effectively. These skills are essential in any field, and by developing them through undergraduate research, students are better prepared to excel in their chosen careers.
The achievement of our research missions requires an appropriate leadership as well as relevant resources. Under the leadership of the two Research Coordinators, Assoc. Prof. Kirsten Robertson (School of Business) and Assist. Prof. Ismail El Sayad (School of Computing), the faculty is moving forward to a more comprehensive research environment characterized by the following initiatives:
- Creation of a research culture
Research culture is a key component of a university's mission to advance knowledge and promote discovery. It allows faculty members and students to engage in original research and contribute to the understanding of a given field of study. Research culture can also foster community engagement, as it often involves working with community partners, government agencies, and industry organizations to address specific challenges and improve the quality of life. Numerous activities and supports are provided to promote the development of research culture.
- Support for research
In collaboration with the UFV Research Office, the Faculty provides support for research: funds, course releases as well as writing activities and research seminars are offed by the Faculty – these activities allows faculty members and students to engage in research and develop important skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork, which are vital for their professional development.
- Dissemination and communication of our research
Working with the UFV Research Office, the Faculty helps to compile all inputs related to research demonstrating how our faculty members are at the forefront of knowledge and discovery in its fields of study. to make an impact, not only on the academic community, but also on the general public and stakeholders.
