Health and well-being resources

UFV has established a Health Initiative steering committee composed of faculty and staff from across the university to develop an integrated health program to support you and create an environment that promotes well-being at work.

The term "well-being" encompasses the many dimensions of an individual's well-being that enhance their quality of life. Good health is comprised of interdependent elements of mind, body, and life. Explore these resources as well as the workshops and e-learning sessions that support this holistic approach to well-being.

You can also learn more on specific topics by checking this month's health awareness campaign.

Diabetes is a serious disease that affects over 3 million Canadians (8.1%) and 200 million people worldwide with that number increasing dramatically every day. Left uncontrolled, this chronic condition can result in high blood sugar levels, which can lead to serious complications such as cardiovascular disease, vision loss, kidney failure, nerve damage, and amputation.

Being able to maintain a secure financial future will alleviate considerable stress in our lives. Annual check-ups are strongly encouraged to ensure that you are on track – evaluate your debt, review your emergency funds and plan for your retirement. December can be a difficult month for many of us with the added expenses of the holidays so we hope that some of the workshops and resources that we are offering this month will help bring you some peace of mind knowing that you have been proactive in your financial planning.

We have been “forced” to work remotely due to circumstances beyond our control and we are fortunate enough to have amazing support from our employer as we’ve navigated our way through this difficult time.

For many, the idea of remotely working from home sounds great – no commuting, no dressing up in suits, no lunches to make, freedom from managers milling about – but is it all it’s cracked up to be? Although there are some benefits of this work style, there are also many challenges including feeling disconnected from, and maintaining engagement with your team; working too much because it’s hard to “switch off” at the end of the day; prioritizing your work and being self-motivated; dealing with interruptions of family, pets or the doorbell; feeling isolated and lonely, and of course, the constant technology hiccups, even though our IT staff has gone over and above to help us function from home smoothly and comfortably.

This month we will focus our wellness efforts on remote work and will provide you with workshops and resources to help you overcome some of the obstacles that you have encountered. Please let us know what you are enjoying or what you are struggling with during this time and we will do our best to support and guide you in a positive direction.
